Marijuana isn&#8217;t,&#8221; said Sean MacDonald, who teaches business administration at the University of Manitoba&#8217;s Asper School of Business (Shutterstock photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WINNIPEG &#8212; Manitoba civil servants will be able swig a beer at office parties, but smoking a joint will still be a no-no after recreational cannabis is legalized, says a draft policy obtained by The Canadian Press.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an issue that many employers, both public and private, will have to deal with once marijuana becomes legal this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alcohol is ingrained in our ways of doing business. Marijuana isn&#8217;t,&#8221; said Sean MacDonald, who teaches business administration at the University of Manitoba&#8217;s Asper School of Business<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Particularly within corporate Canada, there is still a long distance in terms of both education and cultural transformation before they&#8217;re going to view (alcohol and marijuana) on the same level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The five-page draft policy from Manitoba&#8217;s civil service commission, to take effect once recreational pot is legal, says booze will still be OK at some functions, but pot won&#8217;t be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Consumption of alcohol may be acceptable when in conjunction with a workplace event or social function where consumption has been authorized by the appropriate employing authority,&#8221; the document states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The use of cannabis is prohibited at all times in relation to working hours &#8230; and work-related events or social functions, unless it has been prescribed (medically).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There will also be different rules for buying liquor and cannabis on a lunch break under the draft policy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employees who purchase alcohol during a rest period or meal break may store the alcohol, unopened, in a discreet location in the workplace until the end of that work day,&#8221; the policy states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The possession and\/or storage of cannabis in the workplace is prohibited at all times, unless it has been prescribed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>MacDonald said many employers will initially be cautious when it comes to cannabis and set down strict rules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am sure over time they will evolve and probably loosen up to some degree.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Manitoba civil service commission would not comment on the draft policy, other than to say it is still a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An updated policy on workplace impairment is being drafted and will be made available publicly once finalized,&#8221; the commission said in a brief written statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINNIPEG &#8212; Manitoba civil servants will be able swig a beer at office parties, but smoking a joint will still &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":10712,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,16],"tags":[51380,4267,3804,51378,51379],"class_list":["post-165299","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news-ca","category-news","tag-alchohol","tag-cannabis","tag-manitoba","tag-sean-macdonald","tag-university-of-manitobas-asper-school-of-business","mauthors-steve-lambert","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/165299","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=165299"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/165299\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/10712"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=165299"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=165299"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=165299"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
