{"id":163097,"date":"2018-05-08T06:13:42","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=163097"},"modified":"2018-05-08T06:13:42","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T10:13:42","slug":"hrw-disputes-sottos-claim-on-rights-groups-silence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/05\/08\/hrw-disputes-sottos-claim-on-rights-groups-silence\/","title":{"rendered":"HRW disputes Sotto\u2019s claim on rights groups\u2019 \u2018silence\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Human Rights Watch on Tuesday has responded to Senator Vicente \u201cTito\u201d Sotto III\u2019s statement where he questioned the \u201csilence\u201d of human rights groups on rape cases in India.<\/p>\n<p>South Asia director for Human Rights Watch Meenakshi Ganguly said that the HRW \u201chas repeatedly criticized sexual violence in India, calling for an end to institutional barriers to justice, and has recommended reforming and training the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ganguly added that the HRW has focused on human rights violation in several countries, including India and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe draw attention to human rights violations in over 90 countries including in the Philippines, where the spate of extrajudicial killings, apparently with the government\u2019s blessing as it engages in a war on drugs, has however shocked people around the world, including in India,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Sotto on Monday criticized human rights advocates\u2019 alleged silence on the case of a 16-year-old girl from India who was set on fire after being raped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother daily gang rape in India. She was even burned. Why are international human rights groups quiet?
