(<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=6599372\">Photo By David Shankbone &#8211; David Shankbone, CC BY 3.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LOS ANGELES \u2014 \u00a0Before the last one had a chance to simmer down, Kanye West caused another stir, calling American slavery a \u201cchoice\u201d in an interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years, that sounds like choice,\u201d West said on \u201cTMZ Live\u201d after questions on his pro\u2014 President Donald Trump posts and pictures that caused a dust\u2014 up last week. \u201cYou was there for 400 years, and it&#8217;s all of y&#8217;all?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you feel like I&#8217;m thinking free and feeling free?\u201d West asked the TMZ employees in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually don&#8217;t think you&#8217;re thinking anything,\u201d TMZ&#8217;s Van Lathan quickly cracked back at West, as many would in the ensuing hours.<\/p>\n<p>Lathan said while West gets to live the elite artist&#8217;s life, \u201cthe rest of us in society have to deal with these threats in our lives. We have to deal with the marginalization that has come from the 400 years of slavery that you said for our people was our choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Symone D. Sanders, political commentator and CNN contributor, led the anti\u2014 West chorus on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKanye is a dangerous caricature of a &#8216;free\u2014 thinking&#8217; black person in America,\u201d Sanders tweeted. \u201cFrankly, I am disgusted and I&#8217;m over it. Also (I can&#8217;t believe I have to say this): Slavery was far from a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others put it more briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlavery wasn&#8217;t a choice,\u201d Russ Bengtson tweeted, \u201cbut listening to Kanye is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West also told TMZ that he became addicted to opioids that doctors prescribed after he had liposuction surgery in 2016.
