A re-election is also not allowed.<\/p>\n<p>President Rodrigo Roa Duterte\u2019s term will end this 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this January, president of the Senate and the ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino \u2013 Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) said that a term extension for Duterte is possible.<\/p>\n<p>(Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/01\/03\/pimentel-federal-govt-can-extend-rodys-term\/\">Pimentel: Federal gov\u2019t can extend Rody\u2019s term<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can extend the President\u2019s term: One, if really necessary; two, if he is amenable to it; and three, since that extension will be part of the new Constitution, the new Constitution is approved by the people themselves,\u201d the Senator told reporters in a text message.<\/p>\n<p>According to Pimentel, this all depends on the \u201ctransitory provisions\u201d that will be agreed upon by the Constituent assembly (Con-ass).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepends too on when we approve the new Constitution. If 2019, then the next three years will be the transitory period,\u201d he further said.<\/p>\n<p>This was, however, rebutted by Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Jr. who said that Duterte considers a term extension to be a nightmare.<\/p>\n<p>(Read:<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/01\/10\/extension-of-term-ultimate-nightmare-for-duterte-palace-says\/\"> Extension of term \u201cultimate nightmare\u201d for Duterte, Palace says<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Duterte] wants to make institutional changes, particularly on the Constitution and that appears to be his short-term, medium-term and long-term objective\u2026Not even a day longer. To him, that\u2019s the ultimate nightmare. He wants to finish his term.
