{"id":157174,"date":"2018-03-18T07:03:21","date_gmt":"2018-03-18T11:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=157174"},"modified":"2018-03-18T07:03:21","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T11:03:21","slug":"actress-yara-shahidi-hopes-to-inspire-tiny-acts-of-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/03\/18\/actress-yara-shahidi-hopes-to-inspire-tiny-acts-of-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Actress Yara Shahidi hopes to inspire tiny acts of good"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_157175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157175\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/28471286_10156168473104948_5908429267553722723_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-157175\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/28471286_10156168473104948_5908429267553722723_n.jpg\" alt=\"(Photo: Yara Shahidi\/Facebook)\" width=\"768\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/28471286_10156168473104948_5908429267553722723_n.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/28471286_10156168473104948_5908429267553722723_n-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yara Shahidi (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yarashahidi\/photos\/a.10150274727899948.379476.106983384947\/10156168473104948\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yarashahidi\/\">Yara Shahidi\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NEW YORK &#8212; Actress Yara Shahidi wants young people to know that little by little, it&#8217;s possible to make a difference in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The star of Freeform&#8217;s \u201cGrown-ish\u201d is one of a group of influencers across the globe taking part in a movement called Little x Little.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 2 billion people worldwide born between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s making up Generation Z.<\/p>\n<p>Little x Little&#8217;s goal is to inspire as many of those Gen Z&#8217;ers as they can to do 2 billion tiny acts of good by 2030 in support of the United Nations&#8217; Sustainable Development Goals (a list of 17 ways to make the world more peaceful, equitable and healthy.)<\/p>\n<p>Participants are encouraged to post their own efforts to do good on social media &#8212; using the tag #LittlexLittle &#8212; and share ideas, which range from reducing meat consumption to ditching the car and biking instead.<\/p>\n<p>In the two weeks since a \u201cLittle x Little\u201d anthem video launched on YouTube explaining the project, it&#8217;s been viewed more than 15 million times.<\/p>\n<p>Shahidi, 18, says to look no further than this week&#8217;s student walkout to protest gun violence and the upcoming March for Our Lives rallies as an example that young people are socially engaged and want to make the world better.<\/p>\n<p>She also says there&#8217;s a benefit to the abundance of time they spend on their phones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of our interconnectivity, we see people that aren&#8217;t directly in front of us and understand there&#8217;s something greater to contribute to,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her own personal examples of doing good include contributing money and time to causes within a mile radius of her own home.<\/p>\n<p>Another influencer taking part is disabled model Jillian Mercedo.
