MANILA \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0The Department of Agriculture (DA) is imposing a temporary ban on importation of domestic and wild birds from Grootegast, Groningen in the Netherlands due to an outbreak of virus-driven H5N6 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in that place.<\/p>\n

The ban also covers such domestic and wild birds’ products, including\u00a0poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen, DA Secretary Emmanuel Pi\u00f1ol\u00a0said in Memorandum Order 7 dated March 1, 2018.<\/p>\n

“There’s need to prevent entry of HPAI virus to protect the health of the\u00a0local poultry population,” he said.<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1ol has already suspended the processing and evaluation of applications for and the issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary import clearances covering the\u00a0temporarily banned commodities.<\/p>\n

DA veterinary quarantine officers and inspectors in all major Philippine\u00a0ports must stop and confiscate all inbound shipments of the banned\u00a0commodities, except heat-treated products, the DA chief stressed.<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1ol said he had issued Memorandum Order 7 based on the official report\u00a0Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs chief veterinary officer Dr.\u00a0Christianne Bruschke submitted last month to the World Organization for\u00a0Animal Health (OIE).<\/p>\n

The report cited an outbreak of H5N6 HPAI in Olderkerk in Grootegast,\u00a0Groningen, affecting birds.<\/p>\n

“Frozen poultry meat with slaughter\/process date of 21 days prior to\u00a0the HPAI outbreak are allowed to enter the country subject to\u00a0veterinary quarantine rules and regulations,” Pi\u00f1ol, however, clarified.<\/p>\n

Such exception applies to accredited establishments or poultry\u00a0products already in transit upon issuance of the ban, he said.<\/p>\n

He added importing poultry meat products is subject to conditions\u00a0provided in Article 10.4.20 and 10.4.26 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal\u00a0Health Code, 2017.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
