(PNA PHOTO)\" width=\"415\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/harry-roque.jpg 415w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/harry-roque-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-152750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. (PCOO Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong> \u2014 Unpaid taxes must be settled, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said after the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed a tax evasion complaint against Rappler Holdings Corporation (RHC) and its officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u00a0<em>ano pong reaksiyon<\/em>\u00a0<em>natin diyan kung hindi ang batas pinapatupad<\/em>\u00a0(Well, how else should we react if not to say that there are laws being implemented),\u201d Roque said in a Palace briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Kung mayroon talagang hindi nabayarang buwis dapat managot<\/em>\u00a0(If there really are taxes that have not been paid, they should be held liable),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The BIR alleged that Rappler Holdings Corp and its president Maria Ressa and treasurer James Bitanga had a &#8220;willful attempt to evade or defeat tax&#8221; and had a &#8220;deliberate failure to supply correct and accurate information&#8221; in its annual income tax return and value-added tax (VAT) returns for 2015.<\/p>\n<p>BIR said that the aggregate tax liability of RHC amounted to PHP133.84 million.<\/p>\n<p>Ressa described the complaint as &#8220;ludicrous,&#8221; and urged the BIR to &#8220;check its own records.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In January, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revoked Rappler\u2019s certification of incorporation for allegedly violating the constitutional restriction on foreign ownership of mass media.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar, in a radio interview, urged Rappler to also settle its ownership case to be permitted to cover Malaca\u00f1ang events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Talagang kailangan lang ay i-solve ng Rappler iyong kanilang<\/em>\u00a0issue with the Securities and Exchange Commission\u00a0<em>at doon sa\u00a0<\/em>Court of Appeals (Rappler should really solve their issue with the SEC and the Court of Appeals). Once they solve it, that they can reverse the decision\u2026 the CA reversed the decision then by all means they can cover,\u201d Andanar said.<\/p>\n<p>Andanar, meanwhile, reiterated that covering President Rodrigo R.
