{"id":155642,"date":"2018-03-08T03:15:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T08:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=155642"},"modified":"2018-03-08T03:15:49","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T08:15:49","slug":"chief-justice-slams-govt-for-taking-shortcuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/03\/08\/chief-justice-slams-govt-for-taking-shortcuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice slams gov\u2019t for taking \u201cshortcuts\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno took a swipe against the Duterte administration for putting the country in a situation where those who seem to show a contradiction in the government are \u201charassed, intimidated and persecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current state of the nation is one where perceived enemies of the dominant order are considered fair game for harassment, intimidation and persecution\u2026\u201d Sereno said in a forum on women\u2019s rights at St. Scholastica\u2019s College Manila.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the state laws are violated as the government practice \u201cshortcuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortcuts are preferred over adherence to constitutional guarantees of human rights, including denial of due process,\u201d Sereno said.<\/p>\n<p>Sereno also said that the Constitution urges Filipinos to \u201cstrengthen the institutions of democracy, transparency and accountability and not to weaken them\u201d and this should move the nation to be cautious with their actions.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed that the \u201cimpromptu, extemporized, unprepared and unthought-out plans of action that run contrary to the structured way the Constitution designed accountability, harm our nation\u2019s long-term future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have structures and procedures for transparency and accountability.
