MANILA — Though the law provides punishment against those who will be abusing the exercise of free speech, President Aquino will not be seriously punishing his hecklers.<\/p>\n

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma said that there were already several instances of heckling but they are not dealing with the students seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coloma also mentioned the heckling during President Aquino’s Independence Day speech in Naga City where he was interrupted by\u00a0Pio Emmanuel Mijares, a\u00a0student activist.<\/p>\n

Before he was arrested by the Presidential Security Group during the event, Mijares was heard shouting:\u00a0\u201cThere is no change in the Aquino administration,\u201d while waving a banner.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was later on, charged with\u00a0\u201ctumults and other disturbances of public order\u201d or essentially creating \u201calarm and public scandal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Several groups are already asking the government to drop the charges filed against the student activist.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the height of irony, Mr. President, that we the Filipino people have been waiting for more than a year for the arrest of those guilty of graft in the pork barrel scandal, while this young man was very quickly apprehended and detained, and in an event where you were extolling freedom in our country,\u201d read the petition filed through Change.org.<\/span><\/p>\n
