KABUL –<\/strong> A\u00a0large\u00a0explosion\u00a0in\u00a0the eastern part of the\u00a0Afghan\u00a0capital\u00a0on Friday morning killed at least one person, a\u00a0young\u00a0girl, and wounded six people, an\u00a0Afghan\u00a0official said.<\/p>\n

Mohammad Alim Asim, chief of the Kabul ambulance services did not immediately have more details on the\u00a0explosion\u00a0or what had caused it. Earlier, police only said there were casualties\u00a0in\u00a0the blast but did not release any figures\u00a0in\u00a0the immediate aftermath.<\/p>\n

Basir Mujahid, spokesman for the Kabul police chief, said the blast occurred\u00a0in\u00a0eastern Kabul,\u00a0in\u00a0an area that is home to a military training centre, the government’s customs offices and some guest houses.<\/p>\n

Najib Danish, spokesman for the Interior Ministry said the source of the\u00a0explosion\u00a0was a vehicle belonging to a foreign company but did not name it or specify if the blast was a bombing.<\/p>\n

No more details were immediately available.<\/p>\n

Kabul has recently seen a spate of\u00a0large-scale militant attacks by the Taliban and also the Islamic State group, whose affiliate\u00a0in\u00a0Afghanistan has grown stronger since it emerged\u00a0in2014.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0late January, a Taliban attacker drove an ambulance filled with explosives into the heart of the city, killing at least 103 people and wounding as many as 235.<\/p>\n

The Taliban claimed the ambulance attack, as well as an attack a week earlier\u00a0in\u00a0which militants stormed a luxury hotel\u00a0in\u00a0Kabul, killing 22 people, including 14 foreigners, and setting off a 13-hour battle with security forces.<\/p>\n

The recent attacks have underscored the weaknesses of\u00a0Afghan\u00a0security forces more than 16 years after the U.S.-led invasion toppled the Taliban.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
