(Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>GMA Network once again leads the country\u2019s contingent in the 2018 New York Festivals \u201cWorld\u2019s Best TV and Films\u201d Competition with 12 shortlisted entries out of the 17 contenders from the Philippines, including a nomination for\u00a0<strong>Jessica Soho<\/strong>\u2014the only Filipino broadcast journalist who made it to the list.<\/p>\n<p>Soho, GMA News pillar and a Peabody-awardee, has been nominated for the Best News Anchor category. Her program, GMA News TV\u2019s flagship newscast\u00a0<strong><em>State of the Nation with Jessica Soho<\/em><\/strong>, meanwhile, was shortlisted for Best Newscast for its\u00a0<em>\u201cMarawi Liberation: War is Over\u201d<\/em>\u00a0coverage.\u00a0The said newscast documented the liberation of Marawi City after monthslong siege of the city by pro-Islamic State group militants.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cAlaala: A Martial Law Special\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0earned a spot among this year\u2019s finalists for the Docudrama category. The special, which aired in commemoration of the 45<sup>th<\/sup>anniversary of President Marcos\u2019 declaration of Martial Law, featured the journey of activist and award-winning screenwriter Bonifacio Ilagan as portrayed by Kapuso actor Alden Richards.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I-Witness<\/em><\/strong>, the country\u2019s longest-running documentary program, received two nominations this year. One for Kara David\u2019s\u00a0<em>\u201cSundalong Aso (Soldiers with Paws)\u201d<\/em>for the Human Concerns category and another for Atom Araullo\u2019s\u00a0<em>\u201cSilang Kinalimutan (The Forgotten)\u201d\u00a0<\/em>for the International Affairs category.\u00a0<em>Sundalong Aso<\/em>\u00a0shed light on the life of MWDs or military working dogs of the Philippine Army K9 Battalion after these dogs retire from service.\u00a0<em>Silang Kinalimutan,\u00a0<\/em>on the other hand,<em>\u00a0<\/em>featured the story of the Rohingya people who had to flee to neighboring Bangladesh after the Myanmar government denied them citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Documentary program\u00a0<strong><em>Front Row<\/em><\/strong>, meanwhile, was nominated in the Best Public Affairs Program category for its episode\u00a0<em>\u201cBatang Bomba (Bomb Pickers)\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0which is about Aeta children who pick up bomb fragments to earn money.<\/p>\n<p>Investigative program\u00a0<strong><em>Reporter\u2019s Notebook<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>is aiming for a win as well in the Community Portraits category for its report\u00a0<em>\u201cYapak sa Pusod ng Dagat (Footsteps on the Bed)\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>The episode saw the story of Filipinos who risk their lives diving into the ocean without proper equipment in the hope of mining gold that they could sell.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, GMA News TV\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>Reel Time<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0gave the country two more nominations: one in the Human Concerns category via its\u00a0<em>\u201cGutom (Starved)\u201d<\/em>\u00a0episode and another in the Health\/Medical Information category for \u201cHawla (The Untold Story of the Village Monster)\u201d.\u00a0<em>Gutom<\/em>\u00a0zeroed in on the story of two-year-old Roel\u2014who, because of extreme malnourishment, could not walk, much less crawl at his age.\u00a0<em>Hawla<\/em>, meanwhile, featured the story of Nene, a woman kept in a cage because of her psychological condition.<\/p>\n<p>Another GMA News TV program,\u00a0<strong><em>Brigada<\/em><\/strong>, was shortlisted in the Current Affairs category for its report on\u00a0<em>\u201cCombat Camera Team\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>which details the operation of Philippine Army\u2019s Scout Ranger Batallion in Marawi City using combat cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Two projects from the Network&#8217;s Program Support Department also made it to the list of finalists this year:\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cKulayan Natin ang Summer (Colorful Summer)\u201d<\/em><\/strong>in the Art Direction: Promotion\/Open and IDs category and\u00a0<strong><em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/?q=EDSA+31&amp;entry=gmail&amp;source=g\">EDSA 31<\/a><sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary Spot\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the Graphic Design: Promotion\/Open and IDs category.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, GMA Network received an unprecedented\u2014in the history of Philippine broadcast\u2014three New York Fest gold medals for GMA Public Affairs programs<em>Reporter\u2019s Notebook, Front Row,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Reel Time<\/em>.
