{"id":152745,"date":"2018-02-14T02:41:18","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T07:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=152745"},"modified":"2018-02-14T02:41:18","modified_gmt":"2018-02-14T07:41:18","slug":"palace-on-ph-rise-chinese-names-we-object","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/02\/14\/palace-on-ph-rise-chinese-names-we-object\/","title":{"rendered":"Palace on PH Rise Chinese names: We object"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_131481\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131481\" style=\"width: 1350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-131481\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque.jpg\" alt=\"FILE: Harry Roque (PCOO PHOTO)\" width=\"1350\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Harry-Roque-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1350px) 100vw, 1350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-131481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque Jr. (PCOO PHOTO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As an addition to the developments of the dispute between the Philippines and China, the Philippine government rejected China\u2019s move of naming five undersea features in the Philippine Rise\u00a0formerly known as Benham Rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe object and do not recognize the Chinese names given to some undersea features in the Philippine Rise,\u201d Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Jr. said in a statement on February 14.<\/p>\n<p>Roque added that the government has already contacted China on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPer our Philippine embassy in Beijing, they have already raised our concern to China,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He then mentioned that they are \u2018considering\u2019 a recommendation to inform the Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) under IHO-IOC GEBCO about the concern.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government submitted the names Jinghao Seamount (found at about 70 nautical miles east of Cagayan province), Tianbao Seamount (found at about 70 nautical miles east of Cagayan province), Haidonquing Seamount (found at about 190 nautical miles east of Cagayan province), Cuiqiao Hill, and Jujiu Seamount.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, according to a Facebook post by Dr. Jay Batongbacal, director of the University of the Philippines (UP) Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, the International Hydrographic Organization-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (IHO-IOC GEBCO) approved the said names.<\/p>\n<p>He said that three of the undersea features were reportedly discovered during a survey by the China Navy Hydrographic Office\u2019s Li Siguang Hao in 2004, while the names were submitted in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The other two were also reported to be discovered by the same vessel during the same survey.
