Duterte on Tuesday, Feb. 13, welcomed around 150 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were repatriated from Kuwait, promising assistance from the government and job opportunitites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">In his speech at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, the President told newly arrived overseas Filipinos not to lose hope because his administration is ready to assist them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">\u201cWe are here to see to it that every Filipino is treated decently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Duterte said the government is willing to give land to those who are interested in agriculture, adding that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) also has livelihood program for returning OFWs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Underscoring the necessity and urgency to act now to protect OFWs, the President assured the Filipino workers that the government has enough resources to cater to their needs as they go home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">&#8220;So\u00a0<em>huwag na kayong bumalik doon&#8230; Iyong iba naman na<\/em>\u00a0who had a nightmare there, better come home,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">The President said the government could also look for other markets for OFWs.\u00a0He said that for instance, China is opening up for Filipino workers, particularly English teachers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Japan is also another Asian destination for OFWs given its ageing society.\u00a0The President predicted that in the next few years, Japan will require more caregivers and nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">At the same time, Duterte said that to create more jobs locally, he is beefing up efforts to encourage foreign buinesses to come to the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Durerte meanwhile expressed his gratitude to the country\u2019s major airlines &#8212; Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific\u00a0&#8212; for offering their planes to the OFWs to return from Kuwait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019d like to just say to Mr. Lucio Tan and the Gokongwei family,\u00a0<em>si<\/em>\u00a0Lance. In behalf of our countrymen\u2014<em>salamat po<\/em>\u00a0and I will remember you for all time,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Earlier, the President announced a complete ban on OFW deployment to Kuwait after the body of an OFW was found in a freezer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">Tuesday\u2019s event at the NAIA Terminal 1 is part of the administration\u2019s program, \u201cSagip-Sundo ng Pangulo #pangOFWs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv9004494177MsoNormal\">The President was joined by DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac, and other officials from the DOLE, OWWA, NAIA, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, Bureau of Immigration, and Department of Social Welfare and Development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u2014\u00a0President Rodrigo R.
