Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Sunday backed freedom of speech by saying that public wouldn\u2019t be able to know what \u201ctrue news\u201d is without \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSabi nila sa isang kaso \u2013 kung walang<\/em> fake news, hindi natin malalaman kung ano iyong<\/em> true news. Hindi natin malalaman kung anong kasinungalingan, hindi rin natin malalaman kung anong katotohanan <\/em>(As stated in one case \u2014if there\u2019s no fake news, we wouldn\u2019t know what true news is. We would not be able to distinguish the lies, we wouldn\u2019t know what\u2019s the truth),\u201d<\/em> Roque said in a press briefing on the sidelines of Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, let there be a free marketplace of ideas,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

When Roque was asked about his \u201crelationship\u201d with President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s social media supporters, the Palace official said that he would not start a fight with anyone in traditional or social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cAng aking paninindigan: importante ang karapatan ng malayang pananalita at malayang pamamahayag. Ang sa akin lang, doon lang po tayo sa totoo <\/em>(My standpoint is: freedom of speech and freedom of the press are important. For me, we go for the truth),\u201d<\/em> Roque said.<\/p>\n

Roque also said that he had been misunderstood as some \u201cprestigious publications\u201d allegedly reported fake news about his remarks on Philippine Rise, internationally called as Benham Rise.<\/p>\n

Malaca\u00f1ang\u2019s comment on the issue of the country permitting China to conduct research at Philippine Rise recently sparked criticisms.<\/p>\n

\u201cSa totoo lang po, itong<\/em> issue ng<\/em> Benham Rise nagulat ako<\/em> (Actually, I was also shocked by the issue on Benham Rise) \u2013 how prestigious publications can really publish fake news. Kasi malinaw na malinaw po ang sinabi ko doon sa<\/em> tape (I was clear on what I\u2019ve said on the tape),\u201d the Spokesman stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPero noong nakita ko iyong mga istorya, talaga nga naman palang wala namang pagkakaiba minsan doon sa mga sinusulat ng <\/em>established media at doon sa mga sinusulat ng<\/em> social media (But when I saw the stories, there were no difference between what was being written by established media and social media),\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Palace official also defended that it\u2019s long been his advocacy to protect freedom of speech and freedom of press despite rapid increase of fake news in the country.<\/p>\n
