(PNA photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0Mayon Volcano&#8217;s eruption has so far affected 112 hectares of agricultural areas, resulting in production loss and damages to high-value crops, amounting PHP1.56 million.<\/p>\n<p>Such loss and damages consisted of 35 metric tons (MT) of vegetables valued at PHP1.08 million and 6 MT of fiber crops, particularly abaca, worth PHP0.48 million, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported Friday.<\/p>\n<p>DA Field Programs Operational Planning Division chief Christopher Morales updated Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pi\u00f1ol of this in a memorandum dated Jan. 25, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Citing reports from DA&#8217;s Region V office, Morales said among the affected vegetables were ampalaya (bitter gourd), Baguio beans, eggplant, okra, pole sitao, sayote, chili, tomato, and upo (bottle gourd).<\/p>\n<p>He said such crops were in the fruiting stage.<\/p>\n<p>The loss and damages also already affected 141 farmers, noted Morales&#8217; memorandum, which DA released to media Friday afternoon (Jan. 26).<\/p>\n<p>The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) this week raised Mayon Volcano&#8217;s alert level from 3 to 4.<\/p>\n<p>This was with the warning of a possible hazardous eruption, which it considers imminent because of Mayon&#8217;s &#8220;intense unrest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier memorandum dated Jan. 24, 2018 for Pi\u00f1ol, Morales reported the evacuation and transport of 167 farm animals from Mayon Volcano&#8217;s danger zone to pooling and evacuation centers in Camalig and Daraga municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Evacuated were 84 cattle, 80 carabaos, and three horses, said Morales, citing reports of DA&#8217;s Region 5 office.<\/p>\n<p>He said animal healthcare intervention was present at the evacuation centers.<\/p>\n<p>Morales said the farm animals&#8217; evacuation affected 55 livestock raisers\/farmers, who received this week as support almost 17 rolls of nylon rope and 33.4 bags of feed concentrate.<\/p>\n<p>He said the DA had already mobilized its personnel to give updates and conduct on-site validation for identified animal pooling sites.\u00a0<em><strong>(PNA)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA \u2014\u00a0Mayon Volcano&#8217;s eruption has so far affected 112 hectares of agricultural areas, resulting in production loss and damages to &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":148421,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[16,95],"tags":[44915],"class_list":["post-149252","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","category-news-ph","tag-mayon-crop-damage","mauthors-catherine-teves","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/149252","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=149252"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/149252\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/148421"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=149252"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=149252"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=149252"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
