{"id":14920,"date":"2014-06-14T10:31:05","date_gmt":"2014-06-14T02:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=14920"},"modified":"2014-06-14T10:31:05","modified_gmt":"2014-06-14T02:31:05","slug":"un-agencies-step-up-humanitarian-aid-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/06\/14\/un-agencies-step-up-humanitarian-aid-in-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"UN agencies step up humanitarian aid in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_14055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14055\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iraq.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14055\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/iraq.jpg\" alt=\"Wikipedia Photo\" width=\"217\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wikipedia Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">UNITED NATIONS &#8212; The UN agencies are stepping up humanitarian aid in north Iraq, where humanitarian and security situation is worsening due to recent attacks by Islamic insurgents, a UN spokesman told reporters here Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8220;The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is concerned about the shortage of shelter as the displacement numbers increase in Iraq,&#8221; the deputy UN spokesman, Farhan Haq, said at a daily news briefing here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8220;Some 300,000 people are reported to have arrived in Erbil and Duhok with little more than the clothes they were wearing,&#8221; Haq said. &#8220;Many families in Duhok are sheltering in schools, mosques, churches and unfinished buildings.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8220;A growing number of people were now staying in a transit camp near the Khazair checkpoint, near Mosul,&#8221; he said. &#8220;UNHCR has helped the Iraqi government set-up tents and is providing other relief items.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Other UN agencies are installing latrines and water tanks, he said, adding that a new camp, expected to host some 3,000 people, has been set up near Duhok in the Kurdistan region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8220;Two more sites are being planned in the area,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8220;UNHCR has observed that some Mosul families are returning after hearing that water and electricity services have been restored,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As many as 25,000 people are displaced within Mosul.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Islamic insurgents seized Iraq&#8217;s second largest city of Mosul, capital of the Nineveh Province, on Tuesday following days of fighting against government forces. As many as 500,000 people have reportedly fled Mosul in the wake of the violence.
