MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said his department would meet with accredited travel agencies this week to propose an alternative solution to the removal of at least 1,200 passport appointment slots allotted to them.<\/p>\n

Cayetano told reporters Friday that they plan to put the passport on wheels in every travel fair these accredited agencies would conduct, granted they communicate with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before the event.<\/p>\n

“We can work it out with them,”\u00a0Cayetano said.<\/p>\n

However, M.I.C.E. expert and Afro Asian World Events president Angel Bognot said she had apprehensions about the proposal.<\/p>\n

“They are opening the slots\u00a0pero ang gusto nilang mangyari, kami ang may<\/em>\u00a0venue (but what they want to happen is that we provide the venue). But that’s foul. That’s the role of the government\u00a0— to provide venue.\u00a0Kung may<\/em>\u00a0government offices,\u00a0kailangan dun gagawin<\/em>\u00a0(It should be held in government offices),”\u00a0Bognot told reporters in an interview.<\/p>\n

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) has also appealed to Cayetano to reverse the DFA\u2019s decision to remove slots allotted to them.<\/p>\n

PTAA president, Marlene Dado Jante, said since last year, the agency had not indicated whether the removal is final.<\/p>\n

Cayetano said restoring their privilege at present could not be done.<\/p>\n

“By law,\u00a0nakalagay kung sino ang ipa-<\/em>prioritize\u00a0namin. Yung<\/em>\u00a0persons with disability,\u00a0yung<\/em>\u00a0pregnant,\u00a0yung mga babae na may kasamang<\/em>below seven years old,\u00a0may mga anak na<\/em>\u00a0below 10 years old, single parents, senior citizens\u00a0at<\/em>\u00a0OFW (The law identifies those to be given priority \u2013 PWDs, pregnant women, women with children who are less than seven years old, those who have children less than 10 years old, single parents, senior citizens, and overseas Filipino workers),” he explained.<\/p>\n

“Kung bibigyan namin ng<\/em>\u00a0slot\u00a0ang lahat ng mga<\/em>\u00a0travel agency,\u00a0ang mangyayari, kung mas madaling kumuha sa kanila, para bang kung kailangan kong bumili ng<\/em>\u00a0ticket\u00a0nila. Paano kung walang kakayahang bumili ng<\/em>\u00a0ticket? (If we give these travel agencies slots, it would appear that people need to buy tickets from them to avail easily of a slot.
