{"id":14738,"date":"2014-06-12T14:18:43","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T06:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=14738"},"modified":"2014-06-12T18:06:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T10:06:23","slug":"b-c-man-declared-long-term-offender-after-childs-abduction-appeals-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/06\/12\/b-c-man-declared-long-term-offender-after-childs-abduction-appeals-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C. man declared long term offender after child\u2019s abduction appeals sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_1648656.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11675\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_1648656.jpg\" alt=\"teddy bear child crime\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_1648656.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_1648656-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SPARWOOD, B.C.\u2014A man declared a long-term offender after he snatched a three-year-old boy from his home in Sparwood, B.C., is appealing his seven-year prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Randall Hopley was sentenced last November for his role in the September 2011 kidnapping of Kienan Hebert from a second-floor bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>Following a four-day RCMP search for the child, Hopley returned Kienan to the family\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Hopley has a history of sexually abusing children but Kienan was apparently not assaulted during his time with his abductor.<\/p>\n<p>Kienan\u2019s father, Paul Hebert, said he\u2019s shocked that Hopley is appealing the sentence and that he\u2019s worried the long-term offender will hurt others.<\/p>\n<p>Hebert said his son is doing well but still talks about the abduction.<\/p>\n<p>He said he has forgiven Hopley and has previously said he hopes the man who returned his son will be able to change his life.<\/p>\n<p>Hopley\u2019s sentence includes six years and two months for Kienan\u2019s abduction and an additional year for a number of break-ins at residences across the boundary in Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>With credit for time already served, he still faces more than four years behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>Hopley was also sentenced to 10 years of mandatory supervision after he is released\u2014the maximum period under the long-term offender designation.<\/p>\n<p>Court heard that Hopley entered foster care when he was 10 and remained there until he was 19.
