(PCOO Photo)\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/111616-AAA-4.jpg 640w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/111616-AAA-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aguirre said that the DOJ never intended to interfere or violate as it respects the freedom of the press. <a href=\"https:\/\/pcoo.gov.ph\/photo19-111616\/\">(PCOO Photo)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Thursday called the statement of Rappler \u201cunfounded\u201d and \u201cunfair\u201d after the online news organization said that the Department of Justice\u2019s (DOJ) order to probe the case is just a \u201cfishing expedition and simple harassment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ on Wednesday, January 17,\u00a0 ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate any possible criminal liabilities of Rappler.<\/p>\n<p>Aguirre\u00a0stressed that the DOJ never intended to interfere or violate as it respects the freedom of the press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statement of Rappler is clearly unfounded and most unfair to the good men and women of the NBI and of the Department of Justice as a whole. \u00a0Department Order 17 which granted to the NBI the authority to conduct investigation and case build up over possible violation of the constitution and laws by Rappler, was never intended to interfere nor violate press freedom,\u201d Aguirre said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to emphasize that your DOJ respects press freedom. However, to borrow the words of the National Press Club, responsible journalism means compliance with the law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Aguirre said that Rappler should welcome and actively participate in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour DOJ is only after the truth, we owe the Filipino people that much. Rappler\u2019s active participation in the NBI\u2019s investigation will greatly help in bringing out the truth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Constitution or any law has been violated by Rappler, necessarily the DOJ will be involved in its investigation, otherwise the DOJ will be remiss in its duties. We acted after receiving an official communication from the SEC which included a copy of their decision on the Rappler case,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Rappler earlier said in a statement that it is clear that the government\u2019s agenda is to kill press freedom.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a fishing expedition, and pure and simple harassment.
