(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DepEd.Philippines\/photos\/a.380071542052546.85463.359105487482485\/1842570752469277\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Photo: DepEd Philippines\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA, Philippines \u2013 Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Representative France Castro described Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno as \u201cteacher\u2019s enemy #1\u201d after his statements about the plan of increasing the salary of public school teachers in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe consistently opposed proposals for the increase of benefits and salaries of teachers,\u201d Castro said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte instructed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to find ways of increasing the pay of teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Roque added that Duterte wants to double the teachers\u2019 salary following the increase in wages of the uniformed forces. This would be funded through the second package of the Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law.<\/p>\n<p>However, Diokno has u-turned from Duterte\u2019s orders, saying it\u2019s not yet a government \u201cpriority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that is not a priority at this time. Our priority is &#8216;Build, Build, Build&#8217; and the social protection, taking care of the poor,\u201d Diokno said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Castro has gained support for colleagues in House, Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte, and Ako Bicol Representative Rodel Batocabe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the higher revenue take from the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law, the government will have fiscal space to fund a salary increase for teachers,\u201d Villafuerte said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a son of a teacher when the salary of a teacher was ridiculously low, this is cause for jubilation for all our teachers.
