MANILA\u00a0— \u201cNo pretentions.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was how Senator Panfilo Lacson described President Rodrigo Duterte saying he had no doubts the chief executive is sincere in saying he had no plans of extending his term beyond 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no reason to doubt he\u2019s not for extending his term beyond 2022.\u00a0Ang sabi niya pa nga pag naratipikhan na yung bagong charter at naging federal na, bababa na siya<\/em>\u00a0(He even said that as soon as the new charter is ratified and a federal form of government is achieved, he would step down),\u201d Lacson said in a press conference.<\/p>\n

Lacson made this remark in response to ideas being floated by Duterte\u2019s allies in Congress that he may have to extend his term if the shift to a federal form of government pushes through.<\/p>\n

He said that in the few discussions and meetings he has had with Duterte, he saw that the President continued to be \u201coverwhelmed\u201d by the weight of responsibility that comes with being the country\u2019s top official.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the few times, we\u2019ve had discussions, meetings with the President I can see that he\u2019s not happy. He says he was really overwhelmed. He didn\u2019t know that being president was such a tough job),\u201d Lacson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said it in a manner\u00a0na walang<\/em>\u00a0(without) pretensions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Lacson, however, said that the intention of some congressmen to float the idea of a term extension could have a \u201chidden agenda.\u201d
\nHe said the President has mentioned many times that he\u2019s not for a no-election scenario or for a term extension.<\/p>\n

He said that there would be a \u201cdanger\u201d if amendments to the Constitution will be introduced by lawmakers who would benefit from it.<\/p>\n

Like Lacson, Senate Minority Leader Frank Drilon earlier reminded congressmen that Duterte is \u201cvery clear\u201d when he said that he does not want any extension of term.<\/p>\n

The senator earlier described the \u201cno-el\u201d and term extension proposal as \u201cindecent\u201d noting that congressmen were only voting on a proposal that favors them.<\/p>\n
