Calida (PNA photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Solicitor General Jose Calida mocked the opposition lawmakers from the lower house after they filed a petition \u2018challenging the legalities\u2019 of the tax reform law on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019Lack of quorum of Congress.\u2019 Is that all you have to nullify the TRAIN (Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion) Law?\u201d Calida stated on Twitter, mentioning the accounts of the petitioners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you, your honors, for making my job easier,\u201d he tauntingly added.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers from Makabayan bloc in a 33-page petition asked the Supreme Court for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the TRAIN law, for the grounds of being unconstitutional by having no \u201cquorum\u201d after the Congress leadership succeeded in ratifying it in the last three minutes of the session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTRAIN nevertheless rammed through major procedural requirements set by the Rules of the Lower House, and by no less than the fundamental law of the land \u2013 the 1987 Constitution,\u201d part of the petition read.<\/p>\n<p>(Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/01\/11\/leftist-solons-file-petition-vs-train-before-sc\/\">Leftist solons file petition vs TRAIN before SC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio, Bayan Muna Party-list Representative Carlos Zarate, and Anakpawis Representative Ariel \u201cKa Ayik\u201d Casilao filed the petition.<\/p>\n<p>Tinio responded to Calida\u2019s tweet by tweeting, \u201cWhy am I not surprised at your blatant disrespect for basic democratic principles, Mr. Solicitor-General?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of writing, Calida has yet to make a response to Tinio\u2019s reaction to his tweet.<\/p>\n<p>Republic Act 10963 or TRAIN law was implemented in January, which critics not only from the House of Representatives but even from the Senate branded as \u2018anti-poor.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Malaca\u00f1ang is set on defending the tax reform law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe power of taxation is one of those three that cannot be denied as among the State\u2019s power, including the eminent domain and police power,\u201d Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a televised press briefing on Thursday.
