{"id":143786,"date":"2018-01-04T22:13:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-05T03:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=143786"},"modified":"2018-01-04T22:13:24","modified_gmt":"2018-01-05T03:13:24","slug":"no-el-term-extension-wont-help-shift-to-federalism-lacson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2018\/01\/04\/no-el-term-extension-wont-help-shift-to-federalism-lacson\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;No-el,&#8217; term extension won\u2019t help shift to federalism: Lacson"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_101808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101808\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/LacsonPing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-101808\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/LacsonPing.jpg\" alt=\"FILE: Lacson (Photo: Philippine News Agency)\" width=\"500\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/LacsonPing.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/LacsonPing-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Lacson (Photo: Philippine News Agency)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA<\/strong> \u2014 Senator Panfilo Lacson on Thursday said that recent statements released by the two leaders of the Congress &#8211;Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez &#8212; floating a possible no elections and term extension scenario would not help their advocacy to shift to a federal form of government.<\/p>\n<p>Lacson made this remark after both Pimentel and Alvarez on Wednesday raised the possibility of a term extension for President Rodrigo Duterte and no elections if federalism should push through.<\/p>\n<p>He said that opposition lawmakers do not even need to \u201cinvent the best antidote to Charter change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo less than the two leaders of both houses of Congress have started campaigning against it, albeit subliminally,\u201d Lacson said referring to Pimentel and Alvarez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFloating a no-el and term extension scenario, as recent history would suggest, won\u2019t help their advocacy to shift to a federal form of government, inevitably via an amendment of the Constitution,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pimentel earlier said that it is possible to extend the six-year term of Duterte should the government\u2019s shift to federalism pushes through.<\/p>\n<p>In a text message to reporters, Pimentel said that Duterte\u2019s term extension will depend on \u201ctransitory provisions\u201d and when the new constitution is approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepends on the transitory provisions. And depends too on when we approve the new consti(tution). If 2019 then the next three years will be the transitory period,\u201d Pimentel said.<\/p>\n<p>He gave three reasons a term extension could take place &#8212; if it was necessary if Duterte would be willing, and since it would be part of the new constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can extend the president&#8217;s term 1. If really necessary and 2. If he&#8217;s amenable to it and 3.
