{"id":139360,"date":"2017-12-15T01:24:29","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T06:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=139360"},"modified":"2017-12-15T01:24:29","modified_gmt":"2017-12-15T06:24:29","slug":"ago-vows-to-fix-wait-times-for-tickets-to-hyped-infinity-mirrors-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/12\/15\/ago-vows-to-fix-wait-times-for-tickets-to-hyped-infinity-mirrors-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"AGO vows to fix wait times for tickets to hyped &#8216;Infinity Mirrors&#8217; exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_139361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-139361\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Yayoi_Kusama_Infinity_Room.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-139361\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Yayoi_Kusama_Infinity_Room.jpg\" alt=\"This is one of Kusama's first Infinity Rooms (Photo By Helsinki Art Museum, The Broad, CC BY-SA 4.0)\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Yayoi_Kusama_Infinity_Room.jpg 960w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Yayoi_Kusama_Infinity_Room-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Yayoi_Kusama_Infinity_Room-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-139361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is one of Kusama&#8217;s first Infinity Rooms (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=55133200\">Photo By Helsinki Art Museum, The Broad, CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TORONTO &#8212; The Art Gallery of Ontario is vowing to have the kinks worked out in time for the next round of ticket sales to its highly anticipated \u201cInfinity Mirrors\u201d exhibit after\u00a0museum\u00a0members reported wait times of up to eight hours during a pre-sale earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The gallery underestimated the demand for the exhibit by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, said Herman Lo, director of visitor experience at the AGO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it was disappointing for some members who waited a long time online on Tuesday,\u201d said Lo, who assured patrons the next round of ticket sales in January will be smoother.<\/p>\n<p>The AGO&#8217;s website typically gets about 8,000 visitors a day, but saw a combined 60,000 visitors on Tuesday and Wednesday, Lo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with all the prep work, what ended up happening was the demand was even beyond what we expected, and we were not able to process the tickets fast enough,\u201d Lo said in an interview Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfinity Mirrors\u201d has become a social media sensation with visitors eagerly sharing photos of themselves in the exhibit&#8217;s mirror-lined rooms, which are filled with colourful lights and vibrant, idiosyncratic shapes that, due to their repeated reflections, appear to go on forever.<\/p>\n<p>The demand for the exhibit is unprecedented at the AGO, according to Lo.<\/p>\n<p>He said last winter&#8217;s Impressionist exhibit \u201cMystical Lanscapes,\u201d which featured work by Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, broke internal records by generating 500 calls on the first day of ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Kusama, we received 1,300 calls at the contact centre,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The AGO had allotted 30,000 tickets for the first member pre-sale of \u201cInfinity Mirrors,\u201d which runs from March 3 to May 27. Lo said as of Thursday afternoon about 70 per cent had been sold and most of the remaining tickets were for dates near the end of the exhibit&#8217;s run.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lo, the website can generally process about 1,500 tickets an hour. On Tuesday, the online queue approached 18,000 people, resulting in very long wait times.<\/p>\n<p>Lo said the\u00a0museum\u00a0is currently testing its website to strengthen its capacity for the next pre-sale, which starts Jan. 9. The gallery will also be very explicit in its instructions to members, he said. Organizing more ticket releases in smaller batches will also decrease wait times, according to Lo.<\/p>\n<p>Emeraude Mbuku, an AGO member for the last two years, was thrilled when she heard \u201cInfinity Mirrors\u201d was coming to the AGO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#8217;t get all these things in Toronto, and not all of us can afford to travel to go see art,\u201d said the 23-year-old documentary media student who tried to buy tickets Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>When she logged on, the wait time was only an hour, but she said the site crashed before she could buy tickets. She got in line again, but fell asleep before she could make her purchase. When she logged on again Wednesday morning, the date she wanted &#8212; her birthday &#8212; was sold out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just found it frustrating, to say the least,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is probably the AGO&#8217;s biggest event, and I feel like they should have been more prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still hoping to go on her birthday, Mbuku said she&#8217;ll try again during the next pre-sale and settle for a different date if she has to.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit itself will also require patience from its audience. There will be a wait time of about 20 minutes to enter each of the six mirrored rooms, and visitors can only stay in the rooms for 20 to 30 seconds.
