(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pnp.pio\/photos\/pcb.1817888451585736\/1817876068253641\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pnp.pio\/\">Philippine National Police\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Dionardo Carlos on Wednesday\u00a0clarified that no official announcement has been made by President Rodrigo Duterte on the reported appointment of Police Deputy Director General Ramon Apolinario as the successor of PNP chief Director General Ronald \u201cBato\u201d dela Rosa, who is set to retire in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there would be an announcement, the official announcement would come from Malaca\u00f1ang,\u201d Carlos said in a press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The PNP spokesman\u2019s statement came after news reports revealed the name of Apolinario as Dela Rosa\u2019s replacement when he retired on January 21 next year, reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56 for the uniformed service.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of this, Carlos admitted that they were expecting Apolinario to be appointed as the new chief, and that he is the \u201cnumber one choice\u201d of the Chief Executive.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2019Yan ay ipapaalam sa tamang panahon<\/em> (that would be announced in due course), by the appointing authority,\u201d Carlos stressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he\u2019s really the number one candidate to replace by means of seniority, credentials, and the trust of the President,\u201d the PNP spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte has yet to issue a formal statement regarding this.<\/p>\n<p>During the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> PNP National Advisory Council Summit at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino on Tuesday, PNP Center for Strategic Management legal officer Superintendent Ercy Nanette Tomas reportedly disclosed that Apolianrio will be the next PNP Chief.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos, however, made it clear that the announcement was just an \u201cimpromptu spiel,\u201d as he urged the Filipino people to wait for the President\u2019s official announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Apolinario on Wednesday refused to confirm that he has been appointed by Duterte as the next chief.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Hindi pa naman<\/em> official <em>&#8216;yun <\/em>(It\u2019s not yet official)<em>.<\/em> We are waiting for the official announcement so no comment <em>muna ako <\/em>(first),&#8221; Apolinario was quoted as saying in a GMA report.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ako&#8217;y magpo<\/em>-focus <em>pa rin sa trabaho ko <\/em>as deputy chief for administration <em>ni<\/em> (I\u2019ll focus on my duty as deputy chief for administration of) Police Chief Director General [Ronald] &#8216;Bato&#8217; dela Rosa. <em>Kasi marami rin akong mga<\/em> committees <em>tsaka <\/em>conferences <em>na a-attendan <\/em>(Because I have many committees and conferences to attend)<em>,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n<p>A member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1985, Apolinario is set to retire on August 31, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>When Duterte assumed the presidency in July 2016, Dela Rosa, Apolinario, and Chief of the Directorate for personnel Rene Asperas were among the contenders for the position.
