{"id":13668,"date":"2014-06-04T18:38:54","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T10:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=13668"},"modified":"2014-06-04T18:38:54","modified_gmt":"2014-06-04T10:38:54","slug":"prime-minister-harper-in-warsaw-to-begin-busy-european-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/06\/04\/prime-minister-harper-in-warsaw-to-begin-busy-european-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Prime Minister Harper in Warsaw to begin busy European visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_5069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5069\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/pm-harper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5069\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/pm-harper.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Facebook Page of PM Stephen Harper\" width=\"601\" height=\"417\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Facebook Page of PM Stephen Harper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WARSAW, Poland &#8212; Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada is considering options for bolstering its military presence in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Harper stressed no decisions had been taken.<\/p>\n<p>But he says he welcomes U.S. President Barack Obama&#8217;s announcement Tuesday in Warsaw to bolster U.S. military contributions to the region, and to seek $1 billion from Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Harper also announced Canada will modestly bolster its military forces in the greater region by deploying a contingent of approximately 50 soldiers to Latvia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very much looking at options for additional presence going forward but no decisions have been taken,&#8221; Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>Canada already has 50 troops on training maneuvres in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>Harper began his visit to Eastern Europe today by heaping more criticism on Russian actions in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>After meeting in Warsaw with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Harper said Russia&#8217;s &#8220;aggressive behaviour&#8221; requires a sustained and co-ordinated response.<\/p>\n<p>Tusk said he welcomed Canada&#8217;s additional contribution to military resources in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Poland has been pushing hard for increased NATO presence in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Harper said the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin pose a long-term threat to the region that won&#8217;t disappear any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do believe that what is occurring in Russia under President Putin is a serious development with serious long-term consequences that I don&#8217;t believe we should think for a moment will disappear in the near future,&#8221; Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>Harper has labelled Putin a threat to world peace after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula, and for instigating the continuing unrest in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Harper also said he was pleased to see an increase in military co-operation between Poland and Canada, including a joint training exercise now underway.<\/p>\n<p>Harper also affirmed the continued sanctions against members of Putin&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister also used the occasion to congratulate Poland on the 25th anniversary of the nation&#8217;s emergence from communism.
