MANILA<\/strong>\u00a0— Filipinos should emulate the heroism and bravery of Andres Bonifacio as the country commemorates the 154th birth anniversary of the Father of the Revolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Bonifacio was still alive today, he could have said this to all of us: We laid down our lives for the country\u2019s freedom, what fate awaits all our sacrifices today?,\u201d Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Deputy Chairman Frisco San Juan said in his address during the flag-raising ceremony Thursday at the Bonifacio Monument in Balintawak, Quezon City.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this modern time, our country is facing challenges such as increasing poverty, spread of illegal drugs, environmental degradation, corruption in the government as well as the private sector, among others. These are some of the things that we should unite to reject and eradicate just as Bonifacio and the members of the Katipunan tore their cedulas as a symbol of their fight for independence against the Spanish colonialism,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The MMDA official also urged Filipinos to empathize with the concerns of the common people as he cited that Bonifacio has emerged from the ranks of the lower class and led the fight for Philippine independence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must show our concern and contribute in alleviating the plight of our less fortunate countrymen to the best of our ability in honor of Andres Bonifacio.\u201d<\/p>\n

San Juan was the guest of honor in the event which was highlighted by the laying of wreaths in front of the Bonifacio Monument by the Quezon City (QC) local government led by Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte and civic organizations, recitation of the Decalogue of Bonifacio and musical numbers to pay tribute to the national hero.<\/p>\n

The monument was built as part of efforts of the city government to revitalize the Katipunan Freedom Trail which spans from Barangay Bahay Toro in Project 8 up to the stretch of Unang Sigaw and Balumbato going to Caloocan City.<\/p>\n

The trail traverses the path that the Katipuneros took to evade pursuing Spanish troops following the Cry of Pugad Lawin which sparked the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spain, according to the QC Tourism Department.\u00a0(With reports from Paolo Cruz-OJT\/PNA)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
