(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/iemmys\/photos\/ms.c.eJxlzkEOADEIAsAfbQRr0f9~;rOlhD9XrBAgwRCzLBYVRzg~_~;EPRXUCo1gTfZFb2V6K3kKzTXkGo7CnBk5p~_bOSnfKw4~-.bps.a.10155404309367732.1073741895.111063727731\/10155408419797732\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Photo<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/iemmys\/\">International Emmy Awards\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NEW YORK \u2014 Kenneth Branagh won the International Emmy for Best Actor, while Anna Friel won the Best Actress trophy at the 2017 International Emmy Awards gala Monday night in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Branagh and Friel were among 11 winning performers and programs spanning eight countries: Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are presented annually by the International Academy of Television Arts &amp; Sciences, which represents more than 60 countries and 500 companies from all sectors of TV, including internet and mobile technology.<\/p>\n<p>The evening was hosted by Iranian-American comedian-actor Maz Jobrani, who co-stars on the CBS sitcom \u201cSuperior Donuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe International Emmys are like the World Cup of TV,\u201d Jobrani cracked, \u201cand like the World Cup a lot of Americans don&#8217;t know it&#8217;s happening.<\/p>\n<p>Presenters included Kevin McKidd (\u201cGrey&#8217;s Anatomy\u201d), talk-show veteran Larry King, Freddy Rodriguez (\u201cBull\u201d) and Melissa Villasenor (\u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Branagh won for his role as Swedish detective Kurt Wallander in the popular BBC drama series \u201cWallander,\u201d which has won an American following on public television&#8217;s \u201cMasterpiece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friel was awarded for her performance as Sergeant Marcella Backland in the British series \u201cMarcella\u201d (which is available on Netflix).<\/p>\n<p>The other winners include:<\/p>\n<p>Arts: \u201cHip-Hop Evolution\u201d (Canada).<\/p>\n<p>Comedy: \u201cAlan Partridge&#8217;s Scissored Isle\u201d (United Kingdom).<\/p>\n<p>Documentary: \u201cEXODUS: Our Journey to Europe\u201d (United Kingdom).<\/p>\n<p>Drama Series: \u201cMammon II\u201d (Norway).<\/p>\n<p>Non-English Language U.S. Primetime Program: \u201cSr. Avila\u201d (carried on HBO Latin America).<\/p>\n<p>Non-Scripted\u00a0Entertainment: \u201cSorry Voor Alles\u201d (\u201cSorry About That\u201d), (Belgium).<\/p>\n<p>Short-Form Series: \u201cThe Braun Family\u201d (Germany).<\/p>\n<p>Telenovela: \u201cKara Sevda\u201d (\u201cEndless Love\u201d), (Turkey).<\/p>\n<p>TV Movie or Miniseries: \u201cDon&#8217;t Leave Me\u201d (France).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Emmy Directorate Award was presented to Emilio Azcarraga Jean, head of Grupo Televisa, the world&#8217;s largest Spanish-language content provider as well as Mexico&#8217;s largest broadcaster and pay-TV provider.<\/p>\n<p>Not present was Kevin Spacey, who had been announced as the 2017 recipient of the International Emmy Founders Award. His award was rescinded last month after allegations of past sexual misconduct became public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Academy felt that, in light of recent events, we could not present the award to him,\u201d Academy CEO Bruce L.
