(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/writerstrust\/photos\/a.10150568466761184.365551.307497436183\/10154670461551184\/?type=1&amp;theater\">Photo:<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/writerstrust\/\">Writers&#8217; Trust of Canada\/Facebook<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TORONTO\u2014 Canada&#8217;s literary community will come together tonight for the Writers&#8217; Trust Awards in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>David Chariandy and Omar El Akkad are among the finalists for the fiction prize, which was doubled in amount this year to $50,000.<\/p>\n<p>Chariandy is on the short list for \u201cBrother,\u201d about siblings in a Toronto housing complex who confront violence and prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>El Akkad is nominated for the political thriller \u201cAmerican War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists in the fiction category include Claire Cameron for \u201cThe Last Neanderthal,\u201d Carleigh Baker with \u201cBad Endings\u201d and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson for \u201cThis Accident of Being Lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The finalists will receive $5,000 each.<\/p>\n<p>Finalists for the $60,000 nonfiction prize include Tanya Talaga&#8217;s \u201cSeven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death, and Hard Truths in a Northern City\u201d and Carol Off&#8217;s \u201cAll We Leave Behind: A Reporter&#8217;s Journey into the Lives of Others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The non-fiction short list is rounded out by Ivan Coyote&#8217;s \u201cTomboy Survival Guide,\u201d Kyo Maclear&#8217;s \u201cBirds Art Life\u201d and James Maskalyk&#8217;s \u201cLife on the Ground Floor: Letters from the Edge of Emergency Medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are also awards for poetry and young people&#8217;s literature, as well as trophies for lifetime achievement and for new writers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO\u2014 Canada&#8217;s literary community will come together tonight for the Writers&#8217; Trust Awards in Toronto.
