Canada\u2019s Minister of Immigration, Ahmed Hussen, has said that the country will welcome at least as many new immigrants in 2018 as it expects to this year. The Minister\u2019s comments on CBC radio show\u00a0The House<\/em>\u00a0come just before the government is expected to publish its Immigration Levels Plan for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThree hundred thousand is now our new normal,\u201d said Hussen, who did not dismiss the idea of a higher target for 2018.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Minister Hussen had remarked that an annual target of 300,000 new admissions would be the\u00a0\u2018baseline\u2019 figure<\/a>\u00a0for the coming years.<\/p>\n

The Minister added that the \u201cvast majority\u201d of immigrants settling in Canada as permanent residents will be admitted through the economic class, because that\u2019s where the greatest need is. Canada\u2019s internationally-lauded economic immigration system has moved towards a demand-based model called\u00a0Express Entry<\/a>, where the government invites eligible candidates to apply for permanent residence on a priority basis using a\u00a0Comprehensive Ranking System<\/a>. Invited candidates have 90 days to apply, with the government aiming to process the majority of applications within six months.<\/p>\n

Other economic migrants will settle through a\u00a0Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)<\/a>, or be admitted to\u00a0settle in the province of Quebec<\/a>. There will also be a number admitted as\u00a0business immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Canada will also continue to reunite families in the country through its\u00a0Family Class<\/a>\u00a0programs, and the government will continue to uphold its tradition of resettling those in need through its\u00a0refugee resettlement<\/a>\u00a0programs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
