(Photo By: Radio Television Malaca\u00f1ang,  Public Domain)\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/360px-Justin_Trudeau_and_Benigno_Aquino_III_November_2015_cropped.jpg 360w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/360px-Justin_Trudeau_and_Benigno_Aquino_III_November_2015_cropped-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=49347788\">Photo By\u00a0Radio Television Malaca\u00f1ang, Public Domain<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SAINT BRUNO-DE-MONTARVILE, Que. &#8212; Canada supports an undivided Spain, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday in response to the Catalan regional parliament in Barcelona passing a motion unilaterally establishing a new country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada recognizes one united Spain,\u201d Trudeau said in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, just east of Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand there are significant internal discussions that they are going through right now and we simply call for those discussions to be done according to the rule of law, according to the Spanish constitution, according to the principles of international law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut mostly that those conversations and discussions happen in a peaceful, non-violent way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to Friday&#8217;s independence motion, Spain fired the Catalan president and dissolved the regional parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Bloc Quebecois Leader Martine Ouellet responded to remarks made by Andrew Leslie, parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister, which were similar to those Trudeau would make later.<\/p>\n<p>Ouellet called on Canada to recognize an independent Catalonia, saying she hopes the government would \u201cadjust\u201d its stance \u201cbecause it&#8217;s not very classy to take a position like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Quebec\u00a0sovereigntist leader said Canada doesn&#8217;t shy away from \u201cgiving lessons\u201d to countries in Africa, Asia or South America that have seen violence erupt after contested votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then, all of a sudden, because it&#8217;s happening in Europe, (Canada) wants to protect the status quo?\u201d Ouellet asked. \u201cIt&#8217;s troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative party, which has been relatively quiet on the issue since the crisis in Spain began, said it was up to the federal government to take a position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s an extremely complex subject,\u201d said Tory MP Alain Rayes. \u201cThere is no simple answer.
