(Pixabay Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MONTREAL \u2014 In the coming months, dozens of children with food allergies will begin a treatment to desensitize them to their allergens as part of a three-year pilot project at Montreal&#8217;s Sainte-Justine hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Oral immunotherapy involves consuming small portions of the food they&#8217;re allergic to each day.<\/p>\n<p>The amount is gradually increased, with the goal of bettering the patient&#8217;s quality of life and decreasing the risk of an allergic reaction if they accidentally consume the wrong foods.<\/p>\n<p>The success rate is around 70 to 80 per cent, according to a researcher in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go out to the restaurant, or out with friends or to school, let&#8217;s say your dose of sensitization is four peanuts a day, you won&#8217;t have an accident (if you consume) something with traces or with a peanut,\u201d according to Philippe Begin, an allergist-immunologist.<\/p>\n<p>In certain cases, the desensitization can become permanent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some who are able to stop taking the treatment and the responsiveness doesn&#8217;t come back,\u201d Begin said Sunday at a conference hosted by the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s great when it happens, but at the moment we don&#8217;t know who will experience this benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Begin said the goal of the clinic is not to do research, but rather to make the treatment more available and eventually transfer the knowledge to other health centres.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic hopes to ultimately treat about 775 patients.<\/p>\n<p>Oral immunotherapy is much more common at private clinics in the United States than in Quebec, where the public health system doesn&#8217;t necessarily have the resources for such treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The organization Bye Bye Allergies raised $780,000 to open the centre at Sainte-Justine, with the Quebec government contributing about the same amount.<\/p>\n<p>Bye Bye Allergy&#8217;s president said it&#8217;s eventual goal was to make the treatment available across the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 60,000 allergic children in Quebec, and not all families have access to this treatment,\u201d Sophie Beugnot said. \u201cThey&#8217;re found in all the regions of Quebec, not just the greater Montreal area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Begin said the treatment isn&#8217;t for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the demands it puts on patients, he says only those whose quality of life is affected by allergies should seek it out.<\/p>\n<p>Patients must make regular hospital visits, take their daily doses and may have to contend with allergic reactions, although Begin stresses most of these are minor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes people who are very, very motivated and very, very diligent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the treatment is aimed at children because the outcome appears more promising for them.<\/p>\n<p>More research is needed to determine whether it can be given to adults, he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONTREAL \u2014 In the coming months, dozens of children with food allergies will begin a treatment to desensitize them to &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":125914,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[37],"tags":[29178,29177],"class_list":["post-125910","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-food-allergies","tag-new-montreal-clinic","mauthors-vicky-fragasso-marquis","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/125910","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=125910"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/125910\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/125914"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=125910"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=125910"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=125910"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
