Velasquez \/ Wikipedia photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA &#8212; The University of the Philippines (UP) got the highest number of centers of excellence (COEs) and centers of development (CODs) awarded by the Commission on Higher Education according to an unofficial tally.<\/p>\n<p>COEs and CODs are given to schools with the highest degree or level of standards in the areas of instruction, research, and extension.<\/p>\n<p>The unofficial tally was made by compiling all the CHED\u2019s memorandum orders on COEs and CODs released from 2012 to 2013 and assigning one point for each university\u2019s COD and two for a COE.<\/p>\n<p>According to CHED, these higher education institutions will have their COE and COD designation expired on May 31.<\/p>\n<p>A complete list of the top 10 universities in the country with the most number of COEs and CODs includes:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>University of the Philippines Diliman (44)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COE (22) &#8211; biology, chemistry, geology, information technology, marine science, mathematics, molecular biology, physics, statistics, broadcasting, journalism, communication, music, foreign language, English, Filipino, Filipino and English literature, political science, psychology, anthropology and linguistics<\/p>\n<p>COD (0) \u2013 none<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0De La Salle University (25)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COE (9): biology, chemistry, information technology, mathematics, physics, teacher education, literature, Filipino, psychology<\/p>\n<p>COD (7): chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electronics and communications engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, political science<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. University of Santo Tomas (24)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COE (7): biology, chemistry, medicine, nursing, teacher education, music, philosophy<\/p>\n<p>COD (10): chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, physical therapy, journalism, literature, psychology<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. University of San Carlos (16)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COE (3): chemistry, teacher education, anthropology<\/p>\n<p>COD (10): biology, business administration, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, philosophy<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Central Luzon State University (13)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COE (6): agricultural engineering, agriculture, biology, fisheries, teacher education, veterinary medicine<\/p>\n<p>COD (1): chemistry<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.
