The Pontiff and President Aquino delivered statements during a general audience of senior government officials and members of the Diplomatic Corps (Malaca\u00f1ang Photo Bureau)\" width=\"960\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pope-francis-manila-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pope-francis-manila-2-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Pope Francis (Malaca\u00f1ang Photo Bureau)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pope Francis sent a telegram to Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma expressing his condolences over Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Cardinal Ricardo Vidal\u2019s passing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeeply saddened to learn of the death of Cardinal Ricardo Vidal, I extend my sincere condolences to you, and to the clergy, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebu,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope said that he is grateful of the late Cardinal\u2019s \u2018untiring and devoted service to the Church, and for his constant advocacy of dialogue and peace for all the people in the Philippines.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commend his soul to the infinite love and mercy of our heavenly Father,\u201d the Pontiff said.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cAs a pledge of consolation and hope in the Lord, to all who mourn his passing in the certain hope of the Resurrection, I willingly impart my Apostolic Blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vidal passed away on Wednesday morning,\u00a0a few days after being rushed to the hospital for pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>According to Archdiocese of Cebu spokesman Monsignor Joseph Tan, it was Palma that told him the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is confirmed. Our beloved Cardinal has returned to our Creator at 7:28 this morning,\u201d Tan said.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Marinduque, the late Cardinal was ordained as a priest in Lucena, Quezon province on March 17, 1956. It was in 1971 when he was ordained a bishop and was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Malolos.<\/p>\n<p>Two years after, he was appointed as archbishop of the Lipa archdiocese in Batangas. A year after that, he was transferred to Cebu.<\/p>\n<p>Vidal was the fourth Filipino to gain the Prince of the Church title when Pope John Paul II raised him to the Sacred College of Cardinals in 1985.
