I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Leon\u2019s apologies came a day after he said on national television (TV) that depression is a \u201cmade-up\u201d condition and those who suffer from it are simply \u201c<em>nagpapasosyal<\/em>\u201d or trying to be elite.<\/p>\n<p>(READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/10\/05\/joey-de-leon-says-depression-gawa-gawa-lang-calls-depressed-nagpapasosyal\/\">Joey de Leon says depression \u2018<em>gawa-gawa lang<\/em>\u2019, calls depressed \u2018<em>nagpapasosyal<\/em>\u2019<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The comedian\u2019s remarks were made during Eat Bulaga\u2019s Sugod Bahay segment, a mix of comedy and melodrama that appeals to its viewers\u2019 sensibilities by encouraging winners to share stories about their families, particularly the difficulties they face.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the segment ends in a light note where the subjects and hosts, nicknamed <em>Dabarkads<\/em>, laugh off issues. However, the usual didn\u2019t happen on Thursday. Netizens weren\u2019t laughing.<\/p>\n<p>The TV host admitted that he made the mistake of trivializing depression due to his little knowledge of the illness, likening it to stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Naging mababaw lang at magaan ang pagtanggap ng inyong lingkod sa salitang<\/em> (depresyon) <em>iyan. Hanggang nabanggit ko nga iyong \u2018Wala, gawa-gawa lang iyan ng ibang tao.\u2019 Iyon kasi ang paniniwala ko, na ang<\/em> stress <em>at<\/em> depression<em> halos magkapantay lamang.<\/em> [I took that word (depression) shallowly and lightly. Until I mentioned, \u2018It\u2019s nothing. It\u2019s just made-up by others.\u2019 That\u2019s what I believed in, that stress and depression are almost equal],\u201d De Leon said.<\/p>\n<p>De Leon went on by saying that he was admonished by his wife, Eileen, for his statement. He added that his children also explained to him what depression is about and how it is different from stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Pinagalitan po ako ng misis ko na si <\/em>Eileen. <em>Paguwi ko pa ho<\/em>, <em>pinagalitan ako dahil ipinaliwanag n\u2019ya at pati \u2018yung mga anak namin<\/em>, <em>sinabi<\/em>, \u2018Daddy, <em>hindi<\/em> stress \u2018<em>yan<\/em>, \u2018<em>yung<\/em> depression. [I was admonished by my wife, Eileen. When I reached home, she chided me and explained, as well as our children, they said, \u2018Daddy, depression is not just stress],\u201d he recalled, adding that it was far from what he thought it really is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Lalo akong nahiya sa sarili ko nang banggitin ni <\/em>Eileen <em>na may malalapit kaming mahal sa buhay na nagdurusa sa ganoong kalagayan<\/em> [I felt ashamed of myself more when Eileen mentioned that we have close loved ones who suffer from that condition],\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>De Leon shared that he phoned fellow <em>Dabarkads, <\/em>actress Maine Mendoza, the same night to apologize for his remarks. During the segment, it was Maine, among all hosts, who stood firm on her view of depression, insisting that depression is not a joke and shouldn\u2019t be trivialized. Her on-screen love interest, Alden Richards, affirmed her opinion that people who suffer from depression should be given support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Kagabi tinawagan ko si<\/em> Maine.<em> Nag<\/em>-sorry <em>ako kay<\/em> Maine <em>agad dahil s\u2019ya \u2018yung nagbanggit noon agad<\/em>,<em> s\u2019ya \u2018yung nagbanggit tungkol doon sa<\/em> depression. [I called Maine last night. I apologized to Maine right away because she was the first to mention it, the one who talked about depression],\u201d De Leon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo <em>medyo nakaluwag \u2018yung paghinga ko<\/em>. <em>Hirap nga akong matulog hanggang hindi umaabot itong pagkakataon na \u2018to<\/em> [So I was able to breathe better. I had a hard time sleeping until this chance arrives],\u201d he added, referring to his opportunity to apologize to the public.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s any positive outcome this blunder could bring, De Leon hopes that it would open doors for a larger discussion of depression in order to educate people on what it really is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>May kasabihan naman tayo na mapait man ang karungan o edukasyon, karaniwan naman, matamis ang ibinubunga nito. So \u2018yun lang po. Maraming salamat po<\/em> [We have a saying that goes, \u2018The roots of education are bitter, but its fruit is sweet.\u2019 That\u2019s all.
