They did it to themselves).&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AngPoetNyo\/status\/915790900839694341\">(Photo:<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AngPoetNyo\">Joey de Leon\/Twitter<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Joey de Leon\u00a0made a comment on depression which got people reacting.<\/p>\n<p>Just like most segments of the show Eat Bulaga in which hosts ask for contestants to share a piece of their lives, <em>sugod-bahay<\/em> winner Maria Cristina was no different. Jose Manalo asked her about her mother\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Cristina said that her mother was suffering from depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Ang sabi lang po nung doktor<\/em>, depression, <em>tapos \u2018yung katandaan<\/em> <em>kasi<\/em> <em>makakalimutin na po<\/em> (The doctor simply said that it was depression and old-age because she&#8217;s forgetful),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Joey who was in the studio commented, <em>\u201c\u2019Yung<\/em> depression, <em>gawa-gawa lang ng mga tao iyan. Gawa nila sa sarili nila<\/em> (Depression is just made up by people. They did it to themselves).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jose agreed,\u00a0saying that people are just \u2018depressing\u2019 themselves until they get sick.<\/p>\n<p>Jose and Wally Bayola started joking about the issue, as the latter asked Maria Cristina\u2019s mom, Agnes, if she was depressed \u2013 in which she answered no.\u00a0He later commented that the doctor probably made it up.<\/p>\n<p>Maine, who didn&#8217;t seem to be laughing decided to speak in defense of the condition with a firm stance that depression is not something that should be a subject of a joke, \u201c<em>Uy, pero hindi biro \u2018yun, ah<\/em> (Hey, it isn&#8217;t trivial, ah).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Hindi biro \u2018yang <\/em>depression. <em>Hindi siya<\/em> joke (Depression is not trivial. It is not a joke),&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite voicing her opposition, her co-hosts continued on laughing and joking about the condition and asked her for an explanation.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Hindi, kasi maraming nakakararanas ng ganun lalo na sa mga kabataan. Kaya \u2018pag may nakakaranas ng ganun, kailangan natin bigyan ng suporta<\/em> (It is not a joke because a lot of people experience it especially the youth. So if someone is going through it, we need to give them support),\u201d she said. Her on-screen partner Alden Richards who was beside her agreed, commenting &#8220;moral support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Joey stood firm with his opinion and insisted, \u201c<em>Hindi, huwag niyo suportahan. <\/em>(No, do not support them).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all in the mind!\u201d Allan K said.<\/p>\n<p>The connection to the remote was interrupted while Allan K and Joey continued their discussion in the studio. The former asked what depression was about. Joey answered, \u201c<em>Nagpapasosyal lang<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the rich call it depression while the poor simply call it \u2018no hope in life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As much as Filipinos are known for smiling and laughing off problems, netizens are not happy with Joey\u2019s \u2018insensitive\u2019 remarks about mental health. Netizens on Twitter chose to speak up through their keyboards, bashing Joey.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter user @rainneasdjkl tweeted \u201cThe worst part about depression, people who don\u2019t have it, just don\u2019t get it, like Joey De Leon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>@_dontcallmemarry said \u201cDear people who are suffering from depression and other mental illnesses, don\u2019t listen to Joey De Leon. Your condition is not \u2018<em>gawa-gawa lang<\/em> (made up).\u2019<\/p>\n<p>@fatimabadong said \u201cOne of the reasons why people with depression are afraid to speak up is because people like Joey de Leon do exist.<\/p>\n<p>As of writing, the veteran host is still in the number one trending spot in Twitter and hasn&#8217;t responded to the criticisms he received.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joey de Leon\u00a0made a comment on depression which got people reacting.
