TAIPEI, Taiwan — \u201cThe Great Buddha +\u201d led the pack Sunday with 10 nominations, including best feature film and best new director, for next month’s Golden Horse Awards.<\/p>\n

The movie is about a security guard at a factory who watches the dash camera footage of his boss’s car for fun. He gets more than he bargained for when his rich boss’s misdeeds begin to unravel in front of him. Originally a documentary filmmaker, \u201cThe Great Buddha +\u201d director Huang Hsin-yao shot the movie in black and white, and wanted to highlight Taiwanese social issues with the film.<\/p>\n

Trailing behind with seven nominations are three films, including the family drama \u201cLove Education,\u201d the suspense thriller \u201cThe Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful\u201d and the comedy \u201cSee You Tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three of the top-nominated films, including \u201cThe Great Buddha +,\u201d \u201cLove Education\u201d and \u201cThe Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful,\u201d are nominated for best feature film. Also nominated in that category are two Chinese movies — the comedy \u201cFree and Easy\u201d and the coming-of-age film \u201cAngels Wear White.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time in Golden Horse Awards history, three females are nominated for best director — veteran Sylvia Chang for \u201cLove Education,\u201d Hong Kong’s Ann Hui for \u201cOur Time Will Come\u201d and Chinese director Vivian Qu for \u201cAngels Wear White.\u201d Their male counterparts include Yang Ya-che for \u201cThe Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful\u201d and Geng Jun for \u201cFree and Easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the best actor category, past winner Huang Bo (\u201cThe Conformist\u201d) will face off against four first-time best actor nominees. For best actress, past winners including Shu Qi (\u201cThe Village of No Return\u201d), Sylvia Chang, who’s also nominated for best director for \u201cLove Education,\u201d and Kara Wai (\u201cThe Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful\u201d) face off against two first-time nominees.<\/p>\n

The Golden Horse Awards, which will be handed out Nov. 25 in Taipei, are one of the most prestigious film awards for Mandarin-language cinema, with movies from Taiwan, China and Hong Kong vying for honours.<\/p>\n
