{"id":119745,"date":"2017-09-27T01:45:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T05:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=119745"},"modified":"2017-09-27T01:45:31","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T05:45:31","slug":"us-commerce-secretary-outlines-china-trade-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/09\/27\/us-commerce-secretary-outlines-china-trade-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"US commerce secretary outlines China trade priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_119747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119747\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-119747\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (Photo by US Department of Commerce - About - Secretary of Commerce (Hi-resolution photo), Public Domain)\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross.jpg 800w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/U.S.-Commerce-Secretary-Wilbur-Ross-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=56801891\" target=\"_blank\">Photo by US Department of Commerce &#8211; About &#8211; Secretary of Commerce (Hi-resolution photo), Public Domain<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>HONG KONG \u2014 U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Wednesday that the Trump administration&#8217;s priorities as it prepares to tackle \u201cbigger\u201d and \u201cmore difficult\u201d trade issues with China are better market access, less protectionism and protecting intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n<p>Ross spoke to reporters in Hong Kong after his visit earlier in the week to Beijing, where he met with Premier Li Keqiang, China&#8217;s top economic official, as part of preparations for President Donald Trump&#8217;s visit to the country in November.<\/p>\n<p>Ross will also lead a senior trade mission to China that month, the Commerce Department announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met when Xi visited the U.S in April, in a meeting where they agreed on a 100-day plan for trade talks to address Trump&#8217;s complaints about China&#8217;s swollen trade surpluses.<\/p>\n<p>Ross said that while those talks have yielded some progress, such as a deal to let U.S. beef into China, \u201cwe&#8217;re looking for bigger things and more difficult things than what we had in the first 100 days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t elaborate on specific issues, saying only that at the top of the list is \u201cbetter market access both for companies operating there physically and for companies exporting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. also wants less protectionism and more respect for intellectual property rights from China, Ross said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. is actually the least protectionist of any major country and China is one of the most protectionist,\u201d he said, while adding that the \u201cfrankness and an openness\u201d he saw on his visit to Beijing made him optimistic about the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has slammed China&#8217;s large trade surpluses with the United States and ordered an investigation into whether Beijing improperly pressures companies to hand over their technology in exchange for market access.<\/p>\n<p>Xi, who took power in 2012, and other Chinese leaders have vowed to let market forces have a bigger role, give equal treatment to foreign and Chinese companies and roll back the state industry&#8217;s dominant roll.
