NEW YORK — Frank Vincent, a veteran character actor who often played tough guys, including mob boss Phil Leotardo on \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d has died. He was 80.<\/p>\n

Vincent died peacefully on Wednesday, a statement from his family said. No cause of death was given.<\/p>\n

Besides Leotardo, the ruthless New York mob boss who frequently clashed with Tony Soprano on the popular HBO drama and who was memorably whacked at a service station, Vincent portrayed gangsters for director Martin Scorsese. He appeared in \u201cRaging Bull,\u201d \u201cGoodfellas\u201d — where he played Billy Batts, a made man in the Gambino crime family — and \u201cCasino,\u201d playing Frank Marino, based on real-life gangster Frank Cullotta.<\/p>\n

Vincent had small roles in two Spike Lee films, \u201cDo the Right Thing\u201d and \u201cJungle Fever,\u201d and also was in \u201cThe Pope of Greenwich Village,\u201d \u201cLast Exit to Brooklyn,\u201d \u201cNight Falls on Manhattan\u201d and \u201cShark Tale,\u201d among his more than 50 movies.<\/p>\n

Raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, he acted in school plays and learned piano, trumpet and drums. As an adult, he became a session drummer for such singers as Paul Anka, Del Shannon, Trini Lopez and The Belmonts.<\/p>\n

In 1975, he made his feature film acting debut in Ralph DeVito’s \u201cDeath Collector,\u201d where he was spotted by Scorsese.<\/p>\n
