(<a href=\"http:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/eng\/photos#\" target=\"_blank\">Photo: The Prime Minister&#8217;s website<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned North Korea&#8217;s latest nuclear weapon testing and is urging the United Nations to take further steps to contain the country&#8217;s nuclear proliferation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea&#8217;s nuclear test and \u201caggressive\u201d missile testing program \u201crepresents a clear and present threat to the safety and security of its neighbours and the international community,\u201d Trudeau said in a statement released Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>He says North Korea is only further isolating itself by the continued testing.<\/p>\n<p>The statement called on the UN Security Council \u201cto take further decisive action to effectively constrain North Korea&#8217;s proliferation efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>North Korea announced this weekend that it had detonated its sixth and most powerful nuclear test yet, which it declared a \u201cperfect success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau also stated that Canada would continue to work with allies including South Korea, Japan, and the U.S., but did not provide more details on his government&#8217;s involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Erin O&#8217;Toole, the new Conservative foreign affairs critic, said last week that North Korea&#8217;s increased capability to potentially reach North America with a long-range missile changes the conversation, and that Canada should consider joining the U.S. ballistic missile defence shield.<\/p>\n<p>Former Liberal senator Romeo Dallaire has also said that he thinks Canada should join.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau has said that Canada would not get involved in the missile defence shield, a stance that was criticized by several other politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Canada was invited to join the American continental missile-shield system more than a decade ago, but then-prime minister Paul Martin opted against it in 2005 following an extremely divisive national debate.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative government under Stephen Harper was likewise unwilling to reopen the debate, despite having supported Canada&#8217;s participation in ballistic missile defence while in opposition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned North Korea&#8217;s latest nuclear weapon testing and is urging the United Nations to take &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":115768,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,18,1145,16,483],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-115767","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-news-ca","category-headline","category-news","category-politics","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115767","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=115767"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/115767\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/115768"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=115767"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=115767"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=115767"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
