Panfilo Lacson (Photo By Robert Vi\u00f1as \/ Malaca\u00f1ang Photo Bureau &#8211; Presidential Communications Operations Office, Public Domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 Senator Panfilo Lacson on Friday said calls to release detained Senator Leila De Lima are \u201cuncalled for\u201d stressing that the Philippine criminal justice system should be respected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should all understand and respect our criminal justice system,\u201d Lacson said in a press statement after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV called for her release in a privilege speech.<\/p>\n<p>Lacson said the Senate \u201ccannot and will not interfere with the courts that have jurisdiction over Sen. de Lima\u2019s drug cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026The judiciary is independent of the executive and legislative branches. The same goes true, and even worse, in the case of foreign organizations and groups that are calling for her immediate release,\u201d Lacson said.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, representatives from the Women\u2019s Caucus of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) visited De Lima at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City.<\/p>\n<p>CALD, the only alliance of liberal and democratic parties in Asia and has members from 12 countries across the region, described De Lima\u2019s detention as \u201cpolitical persecution\u201d for her opposition to the alleged extrajudicial killings in the country linked to the drug war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have no business in arrogantly asking our president to release Sen. de Lima. That\u2019s totally uncalled for,\u201d Lacson said.<\/p>\n<p>De Lima, meanwhile, expressed gratitude to the Asian women leaders who continued to vouch for her integrity.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently detained in Camp Crame for drug trafficking charges.
