{"id":115361,"date":"2017-09-01T01:29:14","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T05:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=115361"},"modified":"2017-09-01T01:29:14","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T05:29:14","slug":"senate-okays-doj-2018-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/09\/01\/senate-okays-doj-2018-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate okays DOJ 2018 budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_108049\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108049\" style=\"width: 429px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Senateseal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108049\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Senateseal.jpg\" alt=\"FILE: Senate seal (PNA Photo)\" width=\"429\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Senateseal.jpg 429w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Senateseal-297x300.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108049\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE: Senate seal (PNA Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>MANILA\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 The Senate Finance Committee on Thursday approved the proposed 2018 budget of the Department of Justice (DOJ) worth PHP17.276-billion after more than three hours of questioning from senators.<\/p>\n<p>It can be recalled that on August 17, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon requested to defer the hearing to further discuss the preliminary report of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on drug-related killings.<\/p>\n<p>In the second budget hearing on DOJ\u2019s proposed budget, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said the NBI recorded approximately 7,080 drug-related killings but only 50 have been investigated.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, meanwhile, questioned Aguirre on several statements he has made, particularly on criticism against him and other senators and pronouncements tagged as \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trillanes, unconvinced with Aguirre\u2019s replies, initially moved to defer the proposed 2018 budget hearing of the DOJ but withdrew his motion after Aguirre apologized for making claims where he was \u201cmistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecretary Aguirre, I cited seven instances\u00a0<em>kung saan nauuna kayong mag-<\/em>divulge\u00a0<em>ng<\/em>\u00a0very wrong information\u00a0<em>na di niyo vina<\/em>-validate\u00a0<em>pero nung time na lumabas \u2018yun<\/em>\u00a0very, very delicate\u00a0<em>yung<\/em>\u00a0situation (Secretary Aguirre, I cited seven instances where you divulged very wrong information which was not validated but the time it was released, the situation was very, very delicate),\u201d Trillanes told Aguirre.<\/p>\n<p>Among the seven instances Trillanes mentioned was when Aguirre previously insinuated that opposition lawmakers including Trillanes, Senator Benigno Paolo Aquino IV and Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano met in Marawi City on May 2, 2017 with influential Moro clans, including the Lucmans and Alontos, prior to the attack of the Maute terrorist group.<\/p>\n<p>Aguirre, however, explained that the information he revealed to the media in a press conference last June 7 was raw, noting that he wanted to verify and investigate further on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the press conference, I told the media, I do not want to prejudge anybody because this has to be validated, this has to be investigated.\u00a0<em>Ang problema wala yung<\/em>precautionary statement\u00a0<em>\u2018ko<\/em>\u00a0(The problem is my precautionary statement was missing).
