Malaca\u00f1ang on Wednesday said that President Rodrigo Duterte was just being transparent when he announced a possible deal with the kin of former president Ferdinand Marcos over the issue of supposed \u2018hidden wealth.\u2019 (PCOO photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

MANILA\u00a0— Malaca\u00f1ang on Wednesday said that President Rodrigo Duterte was just being transparent when he announced a possible deal with the kin of former president Ferdinand Marcos over the issue of supposed \u2018hidden wealth.\u2019<\/p>\n

This was stressed by Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella after the group Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malaca\u00f1ang (CARMMA) accused the President of being a spokesman for the Marcos clan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe remarks of the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacanang that President Duterte has become the spokesman and negotiator for the Marcoses entirely missed the point. PRRD disclosed about the issue of the Marcos wealth in his speech in the spirit of transparency,\u201d the Palace official said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chief Executive has the best interests of the Filipinos in mind, which is, how our people would benefit from the recovery of the Marcos wealth,\u201d Abella said.<\/p>\n

In his speech Tuesday during the mass oath-taking of newly-appointed officials in Malaca\u00f1ang, Duterte said the Marcos family is willing to \u201copen everything\u201d and \u201creturn\u201d to the Philippine government some wealth in question, including a few gold bars.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Marcoses — I will not name the spokesman —\u00a0sabi nila na<\/em>\u00a0they\u2019ll open everything and probably return \u2018yung nakita lang<\/em>,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSabi nila na, \u2018malaki ang<\/em>\u00a0deficit mo sa\u2026 maybe this year,\u00a0ang<\/em>\u00a0projected deficit spending would be big,\u2019\u00a0sabi niya. Baka makatulong. Pero hindi ito malaki<\/em>,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

Later in the day, CARMMA hit the Presidents statements saying they were\u00a0\u201cnot acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only has Duterte sponsored the official rehabilitation of the dictator, he now also facilitates the exemption of the Marcos heirs from accountability and punishment,\u201d the group said in a statement.<\/p>\n
