The province takes great care of its natural environment, with the parks and protected areas system now totaling over 1000 protected areas, covering over 14 million hectares, or 14.4% of the province. There are 141 ecological Reserves, 35 provincial marine parks, 7 Provincial Heritage Sites, 6 National Historic Sites of Canada, 4 National Parks and 3 National Park Reserves.
