The President has revealed that the Marcoses will \u2018open everything and return\u2019 a part of their wealth, to help the government\u2019s big projected deficit, on his speech on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

As Rodrigo Roa Duterte lead the mass oath-taking of new government officials, in an impromptu speech, he revealed that the family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos \u2013 through a representative he will not name \u2013 are willing to return some of their wealth questioned by the Philippine government.<\/p>\n

\u201cMalaki ang deficit mo sa<\/em>… (You have a big deficit)\u2026 Maybe this year, ang<\/em> (the)\u00a0projected deficit spending would be big. Sabi niya baka makatulong, pero hindi ito malaki <\/em>(he said it might help, though it is not that big),\u201d Duterte narrated.<\/p>\n

Duterte furthered that it will include \u2018a few gold bars,\u2019 \u201cHindi ganun kalaki <\/em>(It\u2019s not a big amount). It’s not a Fort Knox. It’s just a few but sabi nila isauli nila para walang ano <\/em>(they said they will return it).<\/p>\n

The Fort Knox is a vault within the United States Army, in which gold reserves and precious items are stored.<\/p>\n

The unnamed spokesman also told Duterte the Marcoses\u2019 side of the story. \u201cAnd the only reason really was sabi nila<\/em> (they said) that the father was protecting the economy now for the event man na maalis siya <\/em>(that he will be exiled), but he was thought of regaining the Malaca\u00f1ang and that is why ganito ang lumabas <\/em>(it looked like they hid it),\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Duterte did not refer to the wealth as \u2018ill-gotten\u2019 but rather just focused on accepting the Marcos family\u2019s explanation whether it is true or not. An accounting of the returned wealth was promised by the President.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I am] trying to look for a guy not identified with anybody to handle the negotiation, kung gusto nila<\/em> (if they want). I’m looking at a former chief justice. Sila na lang mag-usap<\/em> (They should just discuss) then another CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and maybe a representative of all that is accepted also by all,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

The President ended, saying that he is happy that they have come up with clean terms that is \u2018something worthwhile for Filipinos.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
