WASHINGTON — Even at 68, Pam Grier looks like she can still kick butt.<\/p>\n

And the looks don’t deceive, Grier said. While having never played a superhero, \u201cI’m super in real life,\u201d said Grier, smiling and flicking back some of her flowing hair.<\/p>\n

Grier is still going strong in an almost 50 year film and television career. In an interview with The Associated Press last week, she discussed some of the changes in Hollywood and the return of the female action movie\u00a0star.\u201dI don’t know why people were surprised at the success of ‘Wonder Woman,\u201d’ said Grier,\u00a0star\u00a0of gritty 1970s action movies like \u201cFoxy Brown,\u201d \u201cCoffy,\u201d \u201cBlack Mama\/White Mama,\u201d and others.<\/p>\n

Women like Grier and Angie Dickinson paved the way for current female action stars like Gal Gadot and Charlize Theron, and a new wave of black female stars like Taraji P. Henson in her upcoming \u201cProud Mary\u201d and Meagan Good, who is remaking Grier’s classic \u201cFoxy Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI applaud them, I want them to succeed,\u201d Grier said. \u201cI started it. I don’t want them to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n

But being an action\u00a0star\u00a0has its cost: Grier said she hurt herself numerous times doing stunts, including filming \u201cCoffy.\u201d \u201cI almost broke my ankle,\u201d she said. \u201cThey painted my cast to look like a boot, and I’m limping. And I was ‘Does this look good?’ It looks good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luckily today’s actors have stunt doubles and better equipment, Grier said. When asked about the difference between doing action today and back during her day, she laughed and said: \u201cSports bras.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grier has nothing but good wishes for the remake of \u201cFoxy Brown\u201d and Good.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s going to be interesting,\u201d she said. \u201cYou see, I didn’t have a stuntwoman until ‘Foxy Brown.’ And Meagan, she’s going to do great with stunts. She’ll get the sports bra I didn’t have. And you ask me would I do it again? Yeah, if I had a great sports bra.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grier was in Washington, D.C., this past weekend to be honoured at the annual \u201cSalute Her: Beauty of Diversity Awards Luncheon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, Grier said she has never been inside the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, where she plans to donate some of her movie wardrobe. Part of the reason for her delay is that she wants to go with her mother, Gwendolyn Grier, who lives with her in Colorado but doesn’t fly on airplanes, so it would require a cross country road trip.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to just walk up and stand in line,\u201d said Grier. \u201cI want to just walk up to Will Call and say \u201cHi, everybody!’ and see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grier’s also never been inside the White House, but don’t expect her ask President Donald Trump for an invite. Grier said she was offered a chance to be on the \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d but turned it down, saying she does her \u201cdue diligence\u201d on people before working with them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere’s a man who said he was going to offer jobs, well, your caps are made in China,\u201d Grier said. \u201cI haven’t heard him say that he would have a factory here to put people to work. I haven’t heard his daughter say they would start a factory here to put people to work, so I’m confused. I’m like, ‘Where’s the logic here?\u201d’<\/p>\n

Grier is also promoting the Brown Sugar moving streaming service, which streams iconic black movies like Grier’s \u201cJackie Brown,\u201d \u201cBlack Mama\/White Mama\u201d and others. For Grier, the service is a godsend because her elderly mother can watch some of her lesser-known movies at home that she missed while raising multiple children and making ends meet.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that she’s aging and not well, it’s the best time to sit with her and watch Brown Sugar,\u201d Grier said. \u201cIt brought such joy to her to watch films she hadn’t seen, and to see her crushes, to see Billy Dee Williams, Sidney Poitier, Eddie Murphy, just to see Harry Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, Richard Pryor.\u201d<\/p>\n

She’s also working on turning her bestselling autobiography, \u201cFoxy: My Life in Three Acts,\u201d into a movie, and has some dream casting in mind: comedian Jay Pharoah as Richard Pryor and Roberto Benigni as Italian director Federico Fellini.<\/p>\n
