(Wikimedia commons, Fair use)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LAS VEGAS\u2014 A federal judge in California knocked out a class-action lawsuit Friday that had been filed on behalf of fight fans and pay-per-view subscribers upset that boxer Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines\u00a0wasn&#8217;t 100 per cent healthy for his May 2015 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>In dismissing a consolidated batch of lawsuits, U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner in Los Angeles nevertheless said he has sympathy for fans around the country who felt deceived that Pacquiao didn&#8217;t disclose he had a shoulder injury until about three hours before the fight.<\/p>\n<p>Mayweather won a 12-round decision in an event that drew record cable TV viewership and criticism that the matchup between two of the best fighters of a generation failed to live up its billing.<\/p>\n<p>The judge ruled that fans still got what cable TV providers said viewers paid more than $400 million to see a boxing match between Pacquiao and Mayweather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaintiffs had no legally protected interest or right to see an exciting fight, a fight between two totally healthy and fully prepared boxers, or a fight that lived up to the significant pre-fight hype,\u201d Klausner wrote in his 11-page order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason that competitive sports is so compelling is precisely because the outcome is always at least somewhat uncertain,\u201d the judge said. \u201cAllowing sports fans to sue &#8230; could destroy the very thing that makes sports fandom so special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ruling came one day before another big pay-per-view event\u2014 a Saturday fight in Las Vegas between Mayweather and mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor that was drawing pay-per-view comparisons with the Mayweather-Pacquiao event.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint filed in 2015 involved dozens of plaintiffs in states including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Maryland and Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Tratos, an attorney in Las Vegas for Floyd Mayweather Jr., said the judge decided the fans weren&#8217;t damaged and had no standing to sue.<\/p>\n<p>Hart Robinovitch, a Scottsdale, Arizona, attorney representing more than two dozen clients in 13 states, characterized plaintiffs as \u201cdown, but not out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he may appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were a lot of angry people,\u201d Robinovitch told The Associated Press. \u201cNot only the guy who paid $100 for pay-per-view, but anyone who paid for this without knowing the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAS VEGAS\u2014 A federal judge in California knocked out a class-action lawsuit Friday that had been filed on behalf of &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":114164,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1145,44,17],"tags":[21972,21971],"class_list":["post-114163","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headline","category-sports","category-news-w","tag-mayweather-pacquiao-fight","tag-pay-per-view-subscribers","mauthors-ken-ritter","mauthors-the-canadian-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/114163","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=114163"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/114163\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/114164"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=114163"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=114163"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=114163"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
