Photo courtesy of Choose Philippines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>President Rodrigo Duterte has called on the Filipino people to aspire for the common good and reflect on the lessons from the life of slain former Senator Benigno \u201cNinoy\u201d Aquino Jr. especially \u201con these troubling times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Duterte called Sen. Aquino, the father of former President Benigno \u201cNoynoy\u201d Aquino III and husband of former President Corazon C. Aquino, as a patriot for fighting for what was \u201cright and just in his lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis deeds have taught us that we should always aspire for the common good \u2013 even if one must go against the grain \u2013 and do what is necessary,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>Today marks the late lawmaker\u2019s 34<sup>th<\/sup> death anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte added that even at the time when hope was lost, Ninoy remained steadfast in his struggle to restore democracy through non-violent manner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory is witness to how Ninoy\u2019s work as a journalist and politician drove him to effect positive and meaningful changes in our society\u2026 Up until the very end of his life, he inspired a peaceful revolution that resulted in the liberties we enjoy today,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte added he is hopeful that the commemoration of Aquino\u2019s death would strengthen the late senator\u2019s \u201clegacy of promoting solidarity and patriotism\u201d among Filipinos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough his words of wisdom, let us reflect on his life and realize that, indeed, the Filipino is worthy dying for,\u201d Duterte said, echoing Aquino\u2019s famous line.<\/p>\n<p>Aquino, a vocal critic of Marcos, was shot dead on Aug. 21, 1983 just after his plane landed at then Manila International Airport.<\/p>\n<p>The assassination paved the way for a series of events ending in the 1986 People Power revolution in EDSA that knock down the Marcos regime and put Aquino\u2019s wife Corazon as the president.<\/p>\n<p>However, earlier this month, Duterte called his predecessor Noynoy Aquino \u201c<em>gago<\/em>\u201d for saying the administration\u2019s war on drugs is ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>Duterte is also known as an ally of the Marcos family.
