(ShutterStock)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/rain.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/rain-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PAGASA earlier forecast two to four TCs in the country this August.<br \/>(ShutterStock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; The first tropical cyclone (TC) in the country this month may develop early next week east of Luzon, possibly with occasional heavy rains in the northernmost portions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such TC may be a tropical depression,&#8221; said Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather forecaster Chris Perez on Friday (Aug. 18) on the side of a forum in Metro Manila.<\/p>\n<p>He noted a circulation over the Pacific at present may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) around Saturday (Aug. 19) and may develop into a low-pressure area (LPA) that can eventually intensify into a tropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p>If this situation develops, he said this could enhance the southwest monsoon or &#8216;habagat&#8217; and bring light to heavy rains, particularly over extreme Northern Luzon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge the public to monitor weather updates PAGASA will release beginning this weekend,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>PAGASA earlier forecast two to four TCs in the country this August.<\/p>\n<p>If the current circulation develops into a tropical cyclone, this weather system will assume the local name &#8220;Isang&#8221;, the ninth TC this year.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical storm &#8220;Huaning&#8221; (international name &#8216;Haitang&#8217;) was so far the country&#8217;s last TC, occurring in late July 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines averages around 20 TCs annually, noted PAGASA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;2017 is atypical since there should have been 10 to 11 TCs already in the country between January and August this year,&#8221; said PAGASA weather forecaster Nikos Pe\u00f1aranda.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, he warned about dangers from light to moderate rains that an expected enhanced &#8220;habagat&#8221; and either LPA or TC can bring to Northern Luzon next week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Communities concerned must prepare &#8212; if such rain occurs frequently, this may eventually trigger landslides and flash floods there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In its 24-hour forecast released Friday morning, PAGASA said inter-tropical convergence zone is affecting Southern Luzon and the Visayas.<\/p>\n<p>Pe\u00f1aranda said &#8220;habagat&#8221; receded to the Thailand-Malaysia area so the Philippines is experiencing a monsoon break.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Habagat&#8221; will likely begin prevailing anew in the country next week and help bring rain and thunderstorms to Northern Luzon, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MANILA\u00a0&#8212; The first tropical cyclone (TC) in the country this month may develop early next week east of Luzon, possibly &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":15217,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,1145,16,95,9072],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-112936","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-headline","category-news","category-news-ph","category-weather","mauthors-philippine-news-agency"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/112936","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=112936"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/112936\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/15217"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=112936"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=112936"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=112936"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
