{"id":111460,"date":"2017-08-11T03:26:28","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T07:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=111460"},"modified":"2017-08-11T03:26:28","modified_gmt":"2017-08-11T07:26:28","slug":"over-3m-foreign-tourists-visited-ph-in-first-half-of-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2017\/08\/11\/over-3m-foreign-tourists-visited-ph-in-first-half-of-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 3M foreign tourists visited PH in first half of 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_111461\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111461\" style=\"width: 415px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/WandaAug112017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111461\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/WandaAug112017.jpg\" alt=\"DOT Secretary Wanda Teo (PNA Photo)\" width=\"415\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/WandaAug112017.jpg 415w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/WandaAug112017-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DOT Secretary Wanda Teo (PNA Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>MANILA, Aug. 11 \u2014 More than 3 million foreign tourists visited the Philippines in the first half of 2017 (January to June), data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) showed.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign tourist arrivals for the period of January to June of 2017 jumped by 12.7 percent to 3.357 million compared to 2.978 million in the same period in 2016, DOT Secretary Wanda Teo disclosed in a Congressional budget hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Teo also said that South Korea remained the top tourist market with 795,085 visitors (a 23.68 percent share of total inbound traffic) while US and China came in second and third with 513,443 (15.29 percent) and 454,962 (13.55 percent), respectively.<\/p>\n<p>She attributed the rise in tourist arrivals from emerging markets and China as a significant factor to the improved tourism numbers and industry performance.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese arrivals were up by 33.44 percent with 454,962 visitors compared to last year\u2019s 340,958.<\/p>\n<p>Notable increases were also gained by India at 23.41 percent with 54,663 visitors and Canada at 18.41 percent with 108,243 visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of challenges, the country continued to receive the growing influx of tourists from across the globe, desiring to see our world-class destinations,\u201d Teo said.<\/p>\n<p>The 3.357 million figure comes despite terror threats and President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s declaration of martial law in Mindanao on May 23 showing that the events did not put a dent in tourism numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Congress granted Duterte&#8217;s request to extend martial law in Mindanao until the end of the year to give troops more time to crush the Maute terror group.<\/p>\n<p>Teo, meanwhile, vowed to pursue a more competitive branding campaign to reach its goal of acquiring 7 million foreign tourists by year end.<\/p>\n<p>It may be recalled that the Congress already agreed to raise the DOT\u2019s 2018 budget including a PHP1 billion marketing fund.<\/p>\n<p>The DOT chief said that the marketing fund \u201cwould go a long way\u201d in boosting the agency\u2019s branding campaign that will be at par with those the country\u2019s Asian neighbors.
